Every February, we get extreme cold snaps, which can lead to disastrous home insurance claims. Make sure your home is winter ready by following these tips:
• Keep your house heated to a minimum of 65 degrees.
• Check the location for the main water shutoff in your home. And refresh your memory on—or learn—how it works, in case you have to use it.
• Open hot and cold faucets enough to let them drip slowly.
• Check that fireplaces, wood stoves and electric heaters are working properly.
• Ask a neighbor to check the house regularly any time you're away. Now, this last one may seem obvious. However, most claims I've been notified of during these cold spells are a result of the homeowner traveling for an extended period of time. Please be sure to have someone keep an eye on your home!
