If you retired this year, or retirement is getting close, July is a good time to ask a plain question:
What is handling my taxes now that my paycheck is changing?
For years, payroll may have done a lot of quiet work for you. Federal tax withholding, state tax withholding, retirement plan contributions, health insurance, HSA contributions, all of it happened before money ever reached your checking account.
Retirement can scatter those pieces.
You may have part-year wages, a pension, Social Security, IRA withdrawals, taxable investment income, and more interest from cash or CDs than you used to. Some income may have withholding. Some may not. Some decisions may affect this year, while others may show up later through Medicare premiums or future required withdrawals.
This is not about making retirement more complicated. It is about not letting the first retirement tax year drift along on autopilot.
At Tonjes Financial Group, we help people in and around Northwest Ohio look at these decisions together: income, investments, taxes, cash flow, and the timing of retirement decisions. We are a fee-only fiduciary firm, and coordination is a big part of how we plan for our clients.
If you are nearing retirement or recently retired, an introductory meeting can be a good place to talk through what has changed, what still needs attention this year, and which questions may be worth bringing to your tax professional before year-end.
