As someone who has been through two floods
From a hurricane and having to relocate twice. Along with working both storms. Here is my advice.
•Have enough food, but not too much. If the power goes out for too long this will all be a waste of money. Trust me I spent $600 on food during Matthew.
•Have a plan ahead of time of where you will bunker down in case of flood.
•if you have vehicles that sit in lower areas move them to high ground
•get cash if power is out ATMs will be down as well
•buy non perishable items as well as items that you can eat and cook without power.
•do not drive cars through flood water it can flood the engine if too high
•have a plan for children who breast feed. If you are worried about running out of milk get some formula just in case.
•charge up all electronics ahead of time and buy extra power packs.
•for kids you can download movies to watch offline.
•to entertain them buy books, activity packets, puzzles, games, and coloring books these are cheaper options.
•having a gas stove and water heater means that you will be able to cook and wash in hot water if the power does go out.
•stock up on your propane for your grills. As well as charcoal.
•fill up gas jugs NOW!
•make your home safe by buying sand bags to go around doors, board up areas that you are worried about glass breakeage if you are not going to be home.
•Buy flashlights and lanterns from your local stores
•PLEASE stock up on water in case they turn the water off
•Get your medicines today or tomorrow do not wait.
•in both floods I’ve been in if the flood water gets to your ankles go ahead and leave. The likelihood of it continuing to rise is HIGH.
•Generators are great if you can afford them.
•Bring your elderly family memebers either home with you or go stay with them.
•Get a cooler and have ice ready for your frozen items
•Get you some comfort items as it may be a while before you may be able to go home.
•PLEASE BE SAFE
If you have any other questions let me know. I have places that will be resources for you in case we have another Matthew or Florence situation.
