I just got back from speaking for the Professional Insurance Agents of North Dakota, and their instructions were basically:
“No talking points.
No PowerPoint.
No speech.
Just come make us laugh.”
Well alrighty then. 😂
And y’all… they laughed at EVERYTHING.
Before I went, I had already written a story in my head that maybe this audience wouldn’t connect with the stories I tell. Maybe they’d be too serious. Too reserved. Too “professional.”
Turns out the pen in your head is sometimes an unreliable narrator.
Because these people were AWESOME.
In fact, before I even started, I found out it was Brody’s birthday in the audience, so I opened with:
“Happy Birthday, Brody. This is what you get instead of a stripper.”
And the room LOST IT. 🤣
Thank you, North Dakota, for reminding me that making people laugh is a gift all its own. And never to be undervalued.
And maybe that’s your reminder too:
Be careful about the stories you’re writing before people ever get the chance to tell you who they really are.
Sometimes the story in your head is the only thing standing in the way of connection.
