This summer, The Harraseeket Foundation supported students within a YouthCast Media Group (YMG) workshop, which introduced high school students from under-resourced communities to journalism and story-telling. Through this workshop, students reflected on their past experiences and influences and translated these reflections into their personal stories, future aspirations, and a professional resume.

A student noted that they felt that “the workshop solidified what [they] want to do and pursue in the future.”

If you would like to help students in Northern VA craft their personal stories, please let us know by filling out this form: https://harraseeket.app.neoncrm.com/forms/contact-us

Meet our new Program Manager, Leigha Griffin!

Leigha brings 20+ years of experience in program coordination, volunteer management, and youth development. She previously worked in a nonprofit focused on improving equitable access to critical services for vulnerable families.

Here at Harraseeket, she focuses on building strong relationships with schools and community partners, as she works to ensure that our Imagining Your Future (IYF) program fits with the school environment. Another one of her main focuses is program development and quality, as she continuously looks at what we're learning from students, volunteers, and school partners and analyzes what we should keep, change, or improve, while protecting the core philosophy of IYF.

She notes that she views her role as “making sure the pieces [of IYF] fit together: students have meaningful relationships with adults, volunteers understand how to support them, schools feel like genuine partners, and our experiences actually respond to what students are interested in and ready for.”

Capital One is a shining example of how individuals and organizations can change students’ lives by supporting and volunteering for our Imagining Your Future program. Capital One employees have been mentors and workshop volunteers. Because of that, Harraseeket was invited to participate in Capital One’s pro bono program, with twelve Capital One employees working closely with the team to help spread Imagining Your Future to new communities.

Here’s what Capital One employees who worked with us said:

“As a [Northern Virginia high school] alumni… being able to support Harraseeket and my community was incredibly rewarding. Such a full circle moment!”
“Helping others is important to me, so the mission to empower students was most resonant with me! I’m happy I could contribute.”
“It feels good to be able to apply my skills to such a deserving group. I really appreciate the opportunity to get to work with an awesome team while being a part of this project!”

THANK YOU Capital One!

One of our favorite ways of connecting our students to our community volunteers is through “informational interviews,” to learn stories about their career and life experiences.

While these are “career pathways” stories, we also encourage the human interest stories – with all the good and bad decisions, and the bumps, bruises, successes, disappointments and joys that come with life.

Last month, we had 41 students divided into rotating small groups for story-telling sessions with 11 volunteers including a former college basketball coach, the owner of a construction business, a ground service technician at Dulles Airport, and a nonprofit executive.

“It’s a great feeling when I see a bit of a spark in a student’s eyes when they discover something new about themselves.” This message is what drives our Imagining Your Future (IYF) volunteer, Audrey.

Audrey volunteers with Imagining Your Future because she believes every student deserves a support system to help them imagine their future. From moderating career panels to working one-on-one with students during workshops, Audrey helps create a space where students feel comfortable, supported, and encouraged to explore new possibilities.

We are so grateful for Audrey and the many ways she supports students as they imagine their futures.
