Freight market optimism may finally be returning heading into summer.

According to recent FreightWaves analysis, the long freight recession could be nearing its end as seasonal demand strengthens and capacity continues tightening. While the market still has some uncertainty ahead, many carriers are starting to see stronger freight activity and improving rate conditions moving into Q2 and summer produce season.

After years of tough conditions, carriers are watching closely to see if this momentum can hold. One thing is clear; planning ahead and protecting cash flow remains critical in a changing market.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Proposes 20% UCR Fee Increase for 2027

Another potential cost increase could be coming for carriers, brokers, and owner-operators. The FMCSA has proposed raising Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) fees by an average of 20% starting in 2027 to address a projected funding shortfall in the program. Depending on fleet size, increases could range from $9 to more than $9,000 per year.

For now, 2026 fees would remain unchanged; but carriers should start preparing for higher compliance costs ahead.

• Review your projected 2027 operating costs and compliance budget
• Submit public comments to FMCSA before the comment period closes if you want your voice heard

The trucking industry continues to face rising operational costs, making planning ahead more important than ever.

Don’t Get Locked Out of FMCSA’s New Registration System!

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is rolling out a new registration system this month, and carriers need to take action before the transition. If your portal access, company information, or authorized users aren’t updated ahead of time, you could run into delays or account access issues once the new system goes live.

A few minutes now could save a major headache later.

- Log into your FMCSA Portal and make sure your account is active
- Review and update your company contact information and authorized users before May 14

Stay ahead of the change and keep your operation moving.

Strong seasonal demand is tightening capacity across key produce regions, with re**er rates continuing to climb as the Florida window narrows and freight stacks up heading into peak movement periods.

According to DAT Freight & Analytics, Miami and surrounding Southeast markets are feeling the squeeze as multiple seasonal factors collide — reducing available capacity and pushing rates higher across outbound lanes.

As produce flows shift and trucks reposition across the country, carriers positioned in these lanes are seeing the strongest upward pressure in rates before the market begins to normalize later in the season.

If your insurance renewal feels worse every year, it’s not just you.

According to recent Freight Wave Logistics reporting, rising insurance premiums are being driven by industry‑wide loss trends, legal verdicts, and structural changes in underwriting, not just individual claims history. Even well‑run fleets are feeling the pressure as insurers reprice risk across trucking as a whole.

Insurance has become one of the most unpredictable and least controllable costs in transportation today.

How are higher insurance costs impacting your operation this year?
