Towpath Credit Union, formerly Akron Teachers Credit Union, was established in 1936 for employees of the Akron Public Schools. By 1969, the Akron Teachers Credit Union had outgrown the small Akron office. Many other employee groups had also realized the benefits of being credit union members. This dramatic growth prompted the Board of Directors to approve building the office located at 645 North M

ain Street in Akron that is still open today. The Akron Teachers Credit Union continued to grow with the addition of numerous employee membership groups, and finally by changing to a community charter in early 2004 – for those consumers who can join the credit union - that; live, work, worship and go to school in Summit County Ohio. Later that year, the Akron Teachers Credit Union also changed its name to Towpath Credit Union in order to more accurately describe its field of membership. The name “Towpath Credit Union” was chosen in honor of the historical significance of the canal and towpath in the birth and growth of Akron and surrounding communities. It stretches from Cleveland through Akron to Portsmouth, connecting Lake Erie to the Ohio River. In June of 2011 Towpath Credit Union and the former TeleCommunity Credit Union officially merged and retained the name Towpath Credit Union

Yesterday, our team had the opportunity to participate in the Credit Union Development Educator (DE) Day of Service, and we were proud to give back in our community!

Our team of volunteers spent the day at the PACC Food Pantry, helping serve a delicious lunch and supporting their important work in Akron. By assisting an organization dedicated to addressing food insecurity, we were able to contribute to one of the key development issues that credit unions strive to impact through the DE Day of Service.

DE Day of Service encourages Credit Union Development Educators across the country to turn their training into action by empowering Members, strengthening local communities, and addressing important development issues such as hunger, housing, health, and access to financial services. At Towpath, we are deeply committed to making a positive impact beyond financial services, and we're grateful to partner with organizations like PACC that share our passion for supporting our community.

What a delicious evening at The Taste of Middlebury! 🍽️

Our Towpath Credit Union team had the pleasure of joining The Well CDC at The East End to sample amazing food from 13 talented Akron Food Works entrepreneurs — from Henry’s Ice Cream to Authentic Nigerian Kitchen and beyond!

This year’s event was even more special as Well CDC celebrated their 10-year anniversary, marking a decade of impact and community building.

More than just great food, it was an opportunity to connect with incredible community partners and celebrate the power of local entrepreneurship. We’re proud to support The Well CDC and the work they continue to do every day.

What an incredible evening celebrating creativity and community at the Marion F. Walker Queens Project: For the Love of Art, Music, and Reading!

Towpath Credit Union was proud to sponsor and attend this special event honoring the legacy of Marion F. Walker, a longtime Member whose passion continues to inspire. Her granddaughter, Lannetta, is doing an amazing job carrying that legacy forward by engaging and uplifting Akron’s youth through the arts. The evening was filled with powerful expressions of creativity, from spoken word and dance to singing, and a special appearance by Howard Hewett.

We’re honored to help celebrate a legacy that connects generations and uplifts youth, creativity, and our community.

We had a fantastic time this past Saturday at the Taste of Urban Vision! Our team loved exploring the incredible variety of cuisines that make Akron’s North Hill neighborhood so special.

From flavorful dishes to new favorites, every bite was a reminder of the rich cultures and traditions that come together to create such a vibrant community. Events like this not only celebrate great food, but also the diversity and connections that make North Hill feel like home.

A big thank you to Urban Vision for hosting such a wonderful event!
