The American Liberty Medal series celebrates modern depictions of Liberty, a founding virtue of the United States of America! In 2021, this design was minted in gold, and then in 2022, it was struck into a silver medal. In 1909, the Indian Head Cent retired and was replaced by the Lincoln Cent with a "wheat back" reverse design. The Lincoln Cent continued to have a 95% copper (bronze) composition, but with a neat portrait of President Abraham Lincoln on the obverse. This coveted wheat penny was minted from 1909-1958, until the reverse was changed to a view of the Lincoln Memorial for the coin's 50th anniversary in 1959. Later in 1982, the composition was changed to just copper-plated zinc. The original Wheat Back Penny is understandably a popular piece to collect!

In 1943, due to resource rationing for World War II, the US Mint had to commit the copper for minting pennies for the war effort. But, pennies still needed to be minted, so they were struck with steel instead. Steel cents are an incredible reminder of a critical part of American history.
