Spent more time understanding Smart Market Solutions after my earlier post.

Most "passive income" claims in this space don't hold up under scrutiny.
The work just moves somewhere else - hiring, managing, real estate, marketing.

Smart Market is one of the few models where the math actually works in 2026.

AI computer vision handles transactions.
Machines run 24 hours.
The owner is restocking and managing placement, 1-2 hours per week per machine.

What I like about it is the honesty. No brick and mortar buildout. No staff. No traditional storefront. The model is what it says it is.

The category is still early. But I keep paying attention because the structural assumptions are different from anything else in my inventory.

SmartMarket Solutions provides a better-than-a-franchise opportunity built on AI managed micro-stores. Smarter than vending. Faster than franchising.

You do not have to be an “entrepreneur” type person to own a franchise.

I mean that. The most successful franchisees I've seen aren't necessarily big risk-takers or born salespeople with some innate gift for running a business. Instead, they're regular people who are committed to following the brand’s system, prepared to lead a team, and willing to show up consistently.

The franchise model is designed to give you the framework for success, and train/support you in any areas you aren’t an expert. Your job is to execute the system well and take care of your people.

Food and beverage is the category most franchise operators avoid.

Labor, regulation, margins, staffing - it's hard to make the math work.

Southern Steer found a way through it.

Lean staffing model.
Small footprint.
Reasonable operating hours that allow for actual work-life balance.

Multiple revenue streams layered on the core butcher shop. - Specialty meats.
- Sides.
- Meal packs.
- Meal prep classes.
- Dry aging memberships.

Strategic advisors include the founder of Jan-Pro - which tells you something about how the development side is being approached.

Coming from a food and beverage background, I know how hard this category is to run.

Southern Steer is one of the cleaner attempts I've seen.

Most people exploring business ownership don't know what they're actually looking for.

Not because they haven't thought about it.

Because they haven't thought about it in a structured way.

The first time someone sits down with the entrepreneur profile we use - the structured one that maps motivation, risk tolerance, work style, lifestyle - they almost always learn something they didn't expect.

Sometimes it's that they want way more autonomy than they realized.
Sometimes it's the opposite.
Sometimes the business they thought they wanted is built for a personality type that isn't theirs.

The structure pulls the answer out. It rarely confirms what people walked in expecting.

Most of the real work happens before any brand conversation begins.

Most people assume wealth is built through decades of disciplined saving, but the data tells a very different story. 91% of people worth $5 million or more own a business, and franchising is one of the most accessible, proven paths to get there.

Swipe through to see why the traditional salary model keeps so many high-performing professionals from building real, lasting wealth, and what franchise ownership offers instead.

This September, I'm rappelling 19 stories down a building in the Denver area to raise money for the Cancer League of Colorado.

It's part of an event called Denver Over the Edge.

The Cancer League has been entirely volunteer-run since 1969, and every dollar goes to Colorado cancer research and patient services, which is a big part of why I said yes.

I've always been drawn to edges - I spend a lot of time in the backcountry on terrain that should scare me more than it does.

Funny enough, my workdays look similar, helping people decide whether to step off a different kind of edge into business ownership.

This time I get to take one myself, for a good cause.

If you'd like to help send me over the edge, here's my page:

Any amount helps.

I have a fear of heights. Not a casual one - the real, stomach-dropping kind that shows up whether I invite it or not. And yet I spend a good part of my life in the backcountry, on steep terrain, scrambling up things I probably shouldn't, chasing the exact feeling that scares me. The fear...

Dylan Alito is the kind of small business owner I keep wanting to point people toward.

His company is Van-Go Painting. Clean name, clean operation.

What makes Van-Go distinctive isn't just the quality of work, although that's the foundation.

It's how Dylan built the business as a system from day one - replicable model, teachable training, intentional operations.

Two unusual lanes side by side.

- High-end residential luxury work in the Evergreen and Denver market.
- And commercial coworking space refresh - a niche most painting companies don't pursue.

He came up through hospitality before he came up through paint. That DNA shows up in how he runs the business now.

Recently brought on a marketing team so he could step back from the painting and focus on growing the company.

Operational self-awareness most owners never reach.

Worth knowing about.

Looking for painters near me in Golden, Lakewood, or Denver? Van-Go Painting delivers interior painting, exterior painting, commercial painting, cabinet painting, office turns, and drywall repair across Golden, Lakewood, Evergreen, and the greater Denver metro area. A while back I shared some thoughts on True North Restoration's culture.

The culture part is real. But the model underneath it deserves its own callout.

Disaster restoration is a category where most operators run operations AND fight insurance battles on every job. Most newer operators get crushed by the complexity.

True North is moving toward an end-to-end service model that takes more of that off the operator's plate. Better support for newer franchisees than is typical in the category.

The brands that win this category take the operator seriously, not just the service.

True North is one of those.

At True North Restoration, we understand that your home or business is much more than just a structure – it’s your life. That’s why when disaster strikes, you can count on us to get the job done right – quickly, efficiently, and with as little disruption to your life as possible. We are the ...

Sometimes the opportunity that's right for you is one you never thought to look for.

For one couple, that truth played out over two and a half years - starting with a franchise search in 2023, pausing when life pulled them out of the country, and ending with a music education franchise teaching an instrument they'd both been playing for decades.

It wasn't on their original shortlist. It wasn't even on their radar. But when they came back with fresh eyes, it turned out to be the perfect fit.
