Time to stop buying avocado toast.

According to a recent report from Realtor.com, households have to make nearly $47,000 more per year to afford the typical US home than they did in 2019.

In April, the national median list price of a US home was $431,250. The report estimates that in order to cover the mortgage, property taxes, and insurance on a home like that, a household would need an annual income of $114,000.

That’s 70% higher than it was six years ago and well above the current typical household income.

Mortgage rates and home prices have been leveling off this past year, but the damage has already been done for many potential homebuyers, who are now resigned to doomscrolling Zillow with the rest of us.
