Matt’s Full Review:
Domo Japanese Hibachi Grill, Sushi and Ramen
215 N Green River Road
Evansville, IN

This has been a place I’ve seen a lot of people mention to me for a review. I love some Hibachi and sushi so we had to check it out. I will say I didn’t get any ramen because it’s just so hard to pass up some hibachi food, but I had their ramen back when they were part of the China Bistro and really enjoyed it!
This place is new and looks like it! It is just clean as can be and looks very modern. The decor is extremely warm and inviting. I’m so happy that a great local restaurant picked up this spot because it’s a great location right off the Lloyd Expressway. When we came in we decided to go with a table instead of the grill just so we could enjoy and review the place to ourselves. It was the first time in quite awhile that it was just my wife and I because we had Nana looking after our daughter for us to have a day date. Service was everything you would hope it would be at any restaurant you pick, and now a days that goes quite a long way! In order to give it a fair shot, we decided to try a couple different sushi rolls and each got a hibachi lunch plate. I will say that it seems like they have a pretty large menu for a Hibachi place but I guess that is because they also specialize in ramen, which is great during these colder months of the year. On this adventure of ours, it wasn’t me that checked out the bathrooms as my wife wanted to join the ā€œfunā€ of it as well. She said it was superbly clean, but just needed a sign to point at where it was since you can’t see it from the tables. For the people who haven’t been here yet, you truly will be amazed by how clean and new this place looks!

For our meal, we ordered two similar sushi rolls, mine was just a Valentines Day special and came as a pink roll and shaped into a heart (nice touch by the sushi chef). My wife ordered the steak hibachi and I had the Calamari. The sushi was good, not great, but I think I ordered one that would probably be that way anywhere I went. Usually I stick to a handful of sushi flavors, but today I tried to venture out more so that was my mistake. The salads were also very good, the dressing had a very slight hint of sweetness to it, but it didn’t overpower anything in the bowl. It’s up there as one of my top 5 dressings on a salad! I will say the calamari was cooked very well, which is hit or miss at a lot of places because it gets very chewy fast if over cooked even slightly. There was a beautiful char on it while also remaining soft as could be when biting through it. The light seasonings on it gave it a burst of flavor, I just wish they would have finished it with a drizzle of lemon to go that extra step in bringing out the flavors of the calamari. Don’t take me wrong, this calamari was still really good and tender! As for the steak, to me, it lacked a lot of seasoning in the crust. I know with Hibachi a lot of the flavors are from blending the protein, rice, and veggies together, but it just seemed like a bland steak thrown on the plate. I don’t know if this is the usual or if just our steak was under seasoned before it met the grill, either way I hope next time they load that puppy up with some seasonings! The rice and veggies were all expertly cooked and delectable. I think some of the best mushrooms I’ve had in quite some time!

Check out process was the tried and true method of getting your check and then waiting on the server to return after giving them your payment. So no table side car readers or anything like that. As far as hibachi goes, I’d put this place in second after Roppongi. I used to have that spot reserved by Ninki, but it was overthrown on this day. All are still great choices and you can’t go wrong with any of them!

Value: 8.1
Taste: 9.0 (I’m being generous and not taking the steak into account here as my wife ordered it)
Atmosphere: 8.9
Service: 8.9
Speed: 8.6
Overall an 8.7 so a great choice in town if you are looking for some hibachi. If you want Ramen, try them out and let me know! Like I said I had it at their old location not their new one and it was very good. I just don’t want to review something from years ago.

Matt’s Full Review:
Mr. B’s Pizza & Wings
340 Hirschland Rd
Evansville, IN

I’m excited about reviewing this place because it is another local favorite of mine. During the lockdown for everyone I think we got take-out from here at least once a week. I just love their wings and made in house sauces!

We went here a little while back and I’m just now getting the review of the place, but I’m left myself notes and and pictures to refer back to while writing this all out. When we arrived I would say the main room (not the smaller party room) was about half full and we were sat immediately, which is usually a surprise when coming here because it is usually a packed house. With that said, it didn’t take long after we were sat for the place to fill up and have people waiting, so I guess we got in just at the right time. We were greeted right away by our server, and got our drinks promptly. I’d also like to note that almost every server that walked by had to stop and wave to our daughter while mentioning how cute she is so extremely friendly staff here! We also ordered some cheese bread as an appetizer, I say this to touch on it later. While waiting on our food I decided to look around and try to put a finger on the pulse of this place, and I got to say, if you are a sports fan, this place is where you want to be on game day. They have big screens everywhere! I mean I don’t think there’s a seat in the main area that doesn’t have a view of one of the numerous sports taking place. As a sports fan (mostly soccer) I have to say this is a great environment to watch the games too! There’s no one really going crazy about the games, just some random cheers or boos if its a ā€œbig gameā€ for the locals. This is a nice change of pace from some sports bars where people go bonkers as if their livelihood is riding on the outcome of a game. Don’t get me wrong, rooting for your team is fun and all, but no need to be over the top dramatic about it, it still is just a game (don’t hate me that’s just my opinion, you all do what you like!). Enough about that tangent though, let’s get back to Mr. B’s. Service here seems a tad weird to me because we hardly ever get our food brought out by our server. This isn’t a bad thing in the slightest because that probably means whoever is closest when the food is ready takes it out to the table. Now the reason I mentioned the appetizer was because we got ours and then about 2 minutes later they brought our meals out. Not the best timing, but we still devoured it all none the less. Per usual I went to check out their bathrooms, and besides some torn off pieces of paper towels it looks spotless in there. They chose a great color palette to use in their bathrooms to go with the stainless steel plus they keep it clean so for a Pizza and Wings spot I am always surprised by how clean it looks. On another note, I know they have outside seating with TVs out there as well we just haven’t eaten on the patio yet (just putting it out there for people that enjoy eating outside).

On to the food! The cheese bread is always extra gooey and delicious here and paired with marinara or cheese dipping sauce it just hits the spot for you before your meal. Our daughter even scarfs these down without hesitation. Cheese just seems to have that perfect doneness from the oven and melts over the breadsticks it a magical way like good cheesy bread does. I ordered 20 wings, 10 with sweet habanero sauce and 10 with Hurricane sauce. The hurricane sauce has a dijon type flavor with some added heat to blend into just a special mix, in my humble opinion this sauce is just dynamic and extra tasty (one of my all time favorite wing sauces). I also get the sweet habanero sauce because I do like a touch more heat sometimes while eating wings, as a lot of us do, and these take the heat and also punch you with the sweet flavors. Another pure gold sauce mixture created by Mr. B’s and don’t pass these up, they aren’t super spicy just leave a nice little tingle in your mouth. While I’m also going on about wings, I will say I’ve had them in Buffalo before, which they informed me was the wings Mecca (in the US at least), had some amazing wings and their sauce is just the perfect concoction of heat and velvety butter sauce. I mention Buffalo because the wings at Mr. B’s are the only wings outside of Buffalo that I would give a major stamps of approval, don’t hate on me yet I still like wings at some other places, but when you want so great flavor combos with a tender piece of chicken look no further than Mr. B’s. They are the real deal here and if I’m not mistaken they even make their own ranch sauce (that’s out of this world by the way), that’s just over and above what you get at many other places! My wife ordered some chicken tenders with medium sauce, and warns’t let down either. She loves boneless wings so on this day she went another route and just got the tenders. She can’t seems to stray away from the medium sauce (which again is pretty spot on with true Buffalo sauce). I don’t blame her because she found what she loves and sticks with it. I’m one that loves trying new things and I’ve tried a bunch of their sauces and found my favorites are the ones I ordered (some days I still have to get that medium sauce). On this trip, I will say their flat wing bones did seem slightly more brittle than usual as I had most of them break while trying to eat them. I don’t know if that’s something about how they were cooked or not, just something I noticed.

Checkout is what we all are used to receiving your check, giving your payment to the server then waiting to give them your John Hancock. So nothing special there.

Value: 8.5
Taste: 9.0
Atmosphere: 9.5
Service: 9.2
Speed: 8.1 (only because the timing was off for apps and meal)

Overall between an 8.8 and 8.9 right on the cusp to join the 9 plus club (would be there on this day had the timing worked out better) so still an amazing spot in the city! When you want some wings with some amazing sauces, look no further!

PS. I haven’t really tried the pizza (in a review state of mind) so that’s why there is no mention of it.

Matt’s Full Review:
Siciliano Subs
2021 West Franklin St
Evansville, IN 47711

I’m excited to write this review out as I’ve placed them on my radar for awhile now. I’d consider this place kind of a ā€œhole in the wallā€ sub shop, it’s a small place, but it packs some big flavors and atmosphere. It seems like I walked in just at the right time because as my sub was finished about 3-4 other groups walked in to get their fix. So I’ll thank those for holding out on a sub for that extra minute or two for me lol.

When I say this is a ā€œhole in the wallā€ y’all should know that spells the three letter word yum. These places are always hitting above their weight class in flavors. You don’t find chain restaurants in these tight quarters because they couldn’t keep up. When I walked in, I was greeted immediately by the staff, and I mean each of them. Lucky for me there were a couple people in front of me so I could look around and decide what I wanted to order. I don’t know if the owner knew something or not, but he put on some 90s rock music as I came in and that just puts me in a happy mood because I grew up listening to everything that played. I was sold on the Cuban sub, but when I asked about the secret menu (sorry if this makes it not so secret anymore) they have a cuban with Italian meat added to it (all Boar’s Head). If you’re unsure about a meat, ask them and they will let you try a small piece before loading up your sub (which is the customer service you don’t get everywhere). If it’s your first time, don’t be shy and let them know. They will walk you through the process and find what’s going to taste best to you. The pickles looked like a homemade blend so I asked if they made and marinate in house. They don’t do it in house, but they also don’t just go buy some Vlasic Pickles from Sam’s Club, they found pickles that match their standards, I’m just going to call them green gold (actually Boar’s Head). The owner pulled out one and even let me try it before piling it on my Cuban/Italian secret sub. As I finished my order, like I said before, other groups starting walking in to get their fix. When a place has this steady of a stream of customers you know they’re getting something right!

So I ordered what was the Dani Sub (I believe that's what he called it), a Cuban/Italian sub topped with pickles (green gold), onions, mustard and Swiss cheese. I also grabbed some Zapp’s chips and a Ski to wash it all down. For a ā€œsmallā€ sub, this thing was filling. This place does things so right, they don’t even slice the meat until you order, and to top that off, they have freshly made bread! This sandwich was ridiculously good. The tang with the mustard, the thick stack of meat and the punch of flavor from their green gold, and that beautifully pressed and crunchy bread. Each bite felt like a new adventure as you would get different ratios of meat, toppings, and bread. This sandwich felt as though it were made with years of deliberating different flavor profiles to find the best matches and now one layer just adds to the next. The sandwich I had was a tad messy, but I knew what I was ordering lol. They give us napkins for just that reason! What I find truly amazing about this sub, and some might not even think about it while eating a sub, is that the meat stayed inside the whole time. I mean the bread is cut to be a top and bottom, not that subway half cut stuff (get that out of here). Yet everything held its place and didn’t drop all over me making me look like a fool on camera. I don’t know if there’s a secret to that but well done! I don’t really feel like I need to review the chips and drink because that’s not what this is about, although we all know they are good.

Checkout process is quick and easy as they have the flip pads that a bunch of local places use. If you order chips and a drink you just grab them right off the shelves and you’re on your way, unless you order a warm sub like I did and you gotta wait for it be warm. Which if you order a warm sub, you know you’re waiting on goodness.

Value: 9.0
Taste: 9.1 (that’s right I bumped it up)
Atmosphere: 8.9
Service: 10 (seriously set the standard for how to please a customer in my opinion)
Speed: 8.7

Overall right between a 9.1 and 9.2 that gives it a major stamp of approval and title of a local gem. If you haven’t gone, it’s a must! Service is absolutely on point, and the food sets a high standard for subs.

Cough Cough* and don’t forget to ask about that secret menu *Cough Cough.

Y’all I scored it 9.0 but as I kept eating that score just kept going up. Gonna have to go back and look at my other scores to see where it lands in the end. Tons of meat, and that breadā€¦šŸ¤¤ when you’re ready for a true sub, go visit the true sandwich king at Sicilianos Subs (sorry not sorry Jeff Mauro)!
