In June 2023, I was asked to speak at a Rural Development conference on Flood insurance, specifically the options available outside of the National Flood Insurance Program or NFIP for short.

One specific point I made was that we have private insurance options available that do NOT rely on FEMA funding like NFIP.

As of today, October 14, 2025, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is still not back in force. Congress has not yet reauthorized the program following its expiration on September 30, 2025, due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.

Current Status:
- No new or renewal NFIP policies can be issued.
Existing NFIP policies remain active until their expiration date.

- Claims under active policies are still being processed, but only as long as FEMA has available funds.

- Private flood insurance remains available, but is subject to a 30-day waiting period unless tied to a loan closing.

Last night, the Evansville Parade of Homes Banquet was held, and Shepherd Insurance was the proud award sponsor.

With multiple serious storms so far this year and more to come, I wanted to share the most common coverage information I have been sharing about your personal and commercial vehicles!

- Comprehensive -
- Collision-
- Physical Damage Coverage -

- Comprehensive covers damages from storms, animal hits, glass breakage, vandalism, and theft.

🚙🛻🚥🚨🛑🚧⚠️💥💫💢
- Collision covers damages from hitting another vehicle, stationary object, and other at-fault causes.

💥⚠️🛑🚨
- Under and Un-insured property damage covers your vehicle damages in the event you are hit by another driver but the at-fault party either has no insurance or too low liability coverages that wouldn’t cover the damages or total loss of your vehicle. This is why we tell you to ALWAYS call the police, so there is a driver exchange of information, and the carrier can go after the at-fault party and you are not footing the bill under YOUR collision coverage and deductible.

Always feel free to discuss your selected coverages with your agent or carrier.

Some of our neighbors are still without power!

It has been incredibly heartwarming to see how many of my social media friends opened their homes and businesses for these individuals!

Ok, there is a meme that says "this is full coverage weather, if you have liability only don't drive today" although "full coverage" is a known term it is a bank term and agents begrudgingly use it.

The more correct way is:
"This is Comprehensive and Collision weather. If you have liability only, you are driving at your own increased risk."

❄️ If you don't have Collision coverage do not drive today!!!
- If you drove on ice/snow and it resulted in you driving into another vehicle or stationary object, like a ditch or pole, that is a Collision 💥 claim and the damages to your vehicle are considered "at-fault" a.k.a. your fault.

❄️ If a tree has fallen on your car that is Comprehensive coverage!
- This is an "act of God" where your vehicle happened to be out in the elements parked and unoccupied, this makes the accident Comprehensive and non-fault, a.k.a weather related.

I will not be leaving my house until the roads have been treated, I have enough coffee, snacks and Wi-Fi to work from home.

Be safe out there friends. Don't drive unless you have to or if you are experienced with the right vehicles.
