🐑 Farm Spotlight: 🐑

Jacqueline Smith founded Central Grazing Company in 2015 on the premise that all livestock deserve a good, peaceful, humane life. Central Grazing raises breeding stock and works with other regional lamb producers to shepherd their flocks, with an eye toward environmental stewardship through regenerating grasslands and building a transparent supply chain that aims for zero waste. Their meat is available at locations across the country.

At Iroquois Valley, we see the dedication that organic, regenerative farmers put into producing healthy, humane, and climate-resilient food for our country. This Thanksgiving, we ask you to reflect on the land stewards who grew the green beans, tended the corn fields, and raised the turkeys that grace your holiday tables. We are thankful for their partnerships every day, but especially as we celebrate with our families and enjoy the abundance of their hard work — Happy Thanksgiving from the team at Iroquois Valley

It is projected that 40% of U.S. farmland will change hands in the next 15 years. Currently, only 2% of that farmland is certified organic. As our fertile soils change hands, we must seize the opportunity to help young farmers adopt regenerative practices.

Here at Iroquois Valley, our work is devoted to ensuring the generational transfer of farmland includes an expansion of organic. Providing access to capital for the next generation of land stewards is key — 75% of Iroquois Valley farmers are millennial and Gen Z.

MEET OUR FARM — ELI'S RIDGE 🌳 Shawn and Jennifer Hatley are fourth-generation farmers from Stanly County, NC who raise sheep, pigs, cows, ducks, and chickens with their sons, Blake and Eli. Embracing sustainable and regenerative farming principles, the Hatleys practice silvopasture, blending perennial pastures with forestland.

Last month, Iroquois Valley team members visited the farm, walked through the lush silvopasture, and met their livestock. The air hummed with bees and the fields teemed with healthy sheep — a testament to their dedication to land stewardship.

Meet Janie's Mill 🌾 a multi-generational organic grain farm and mill in Ashkum, IL, led by Harold and Ross Wilken. Harold is a trailblazer here at Iroquois Valley, as he was our first farmer to join in 2007! Last month, our team toured the mill, walked through fields of warthog wheat, and visited the heritage grain trials they are running with the University of Illinois. 🌾✨It was an inspiring day getting to see organic farming in action!

Last night, Iroquois Valley and gathered investors and friends for a festive early summer party. All enjoyed local food, live music, a farm tour, a raffle, birds chirping in the silvopasture, and pigs frolicking in the sunset. Many thanks to our Chicago-area investors who joined us to celebrate summer bounty. If you missed it, we have plans for more at other farms in the coming seasons, and we hope you can join us at our next celebration!
