We got a bullet through one of our giant plate glass windows. It made it all the way through the office hitting a old peripheral device on the wall. The bullet ricocheted and it has not been found yet. We are still looking. It happens about 5 am. Obviously no one was in the office.

To All,

My brother Jim, James Lyman Earll, has officially announced his retirement from Earll, Lyman & Haigh Inc effective January 1st of 2018. After 56 years of coming to the same office here in Evanston it's about time for him to let go. Jim has been an integral part of the daily operations of our office and frankly I don't know how we are going to get along without him. Always eager to help anyone who called, doing his best to solve all the daily problems we encounter in our service minded business. Our office is more than a business to us it was an extension of our family.

He was old school, learning as I did from our father Everett C Earll and Walt Lyman dating back to 1946. Jim and I both worked at the office doing filing and stamping envelopes as far back as either of us can remember. Jim started at the beginning of 1962 as a full time licensed insurance agent. He quickly took over the daily operations introducing the first steps of agency automation by installing, programming, training and implementing a huge automated ledger accounting system. Several years later he moved us in to the first ever insurance agency specific batch accounting system. Jim was always way ahead of his time and still at the age of 75 often contributes new innovative process streamlining ideas and company specific shortcuts.

Jim can still be reached at his company email, [email protected], which he continues to monitor. He is still involved in agency decisions as this agency is still our family legacy.

Good luck to him and enjoy some much-earned time in his other passions, woodworking and bowling.

Hackers broke into Equifax and stole personal information from up to 143 million consumers - the vast majority in the U.S.

One of my clients recently called me for advice regarding a letter she received from Honda. In the letter, they state " Past ruptures like this have killed and injured vehicle drivers and passengers". They also indicated that they consider it so serious that they are instituting "The provision of, reimbursement for, temporary alternative transportation, as necessary" until the parts to fix her car become available later this year.

Wow!

I don't know about the other manufacturers, but if Honda is doing it, other manufacturers might be as well. If your car is on the recall list, you should contact your manufacturer and inquire.

A quote from Warren Buffett regarding GEICO - Distracted driving is costing all of us.

According to data from the National Safety Council, the current estimated number of traffic-related deaths in the country rose by 8% from 2014 to 2015—the largest year-to-year percentage increase in fifty years.

“I personally believe that [it was because of] distracted driving, which was listed for about 10% of the deaths in 2014,” the investor said. “The frequency of accidents, the frequency of deaths per hundred million vehicle miles went up quite significantly in 2015, and that’s the first time in a long time.”

Buffett underlined in his interview that the increases in car accident frequency and severity still occurred despite advances in automobile safety. Those increases, in turn, prompted auto rate increases.
