Hey everyone! I know I haven't been very active on here for awhile so I wanted to give you all a little life update: I recently moved back to Red Bluff, and while I would love to continue helping you all with your mortgage needs, I have decided to put my mortgage license on hold while I focus on settling in and helping my family. I'm looking forward to getting back to closing home loans real soon!

New House Hack Alert! 🚨 The Sneaky Duplex….

03/18/2022

How freaking cute is Kayla Dias, Realtor's new Scotia listing?!? Not to mention it's under $300,000, which is a STEAL for Humboldt's real estate market right now! There's an open house today from 4-6PM and tomorrow from 1-3PM. This cutie won't last long!

Another happy homebuyer! I love making my client's life as easy as possible.

Hi! I’m Callahan Wolverton aka Cal The Mortgage Gal, your local Humboldt County mortgage advisor with Key Mortgage Group in Eureka. It’s been awhile since I introduced myself so here are a few fun facts about yours truly:

• I was born on a Friday the 13th

• I was born in Fortuna, CA, raised in Arcata, CA (AHS Class of 2006), and I’ve lived all over Humboldt County

• I wanted to be a veterinarian when I grew up

• I’ve been peed on by a lion and gotten stuck in an airport escalator (core memories)

• I built a house when I was 17 through the Building Trades ROP (and yes, it’s still standing)

• I graduated from with a degree in Business Administration, a degree in Ag Business, and a certificate in Non-Profit Management

• While at Shasta, I worked in the swine unit where I fell in love with all things 🐖

• I was the COO of a women’s outdoor apparel company prior to getting my mortgage license

• I bought my first house on my own at 29 using a USDA loan

• I’m a proud dog mama to Ember, a 3 year old petite black lab

• I’m getting married this year

• I have a slight addiction to buffalo sauce

• In my world, cowboy boots go with everything

• I try to read at least 50 books each year

• I’m a sucker for a punny joke

• My favorite place to be is out in the woods or at the lake/river

• I’m the executive director of , a youth non-profit

• Since starting my mortgage career, I’ve been able to help almost 100 families buy a new home or refinance their current home

• I’m licensed in California and I’ve closed loans as far south as San Diego and as far north as Crescent City

Now that you know a little more about me, let’s be friends! I’d love the opportunity to learn more about you and your mortgage needs. Housing inventory is tight and rates are back to pre-pandemic levels so it’s important to have an experienced loan officer on your side to help you guide you through the home buying process. 🗝

In honor of , I wanted to remind you that up until the Fair Housing Act was passed in 1968, it was LEGAL (and strongly encouraged) for mortgage lenders to partner with the federal government to REDLINE minority neighborhoods and REFUSE to lend on any house in that area.

The term “redlining” was coined by sociologist John McKnight in the 1960s and derives from how the federal government and lenders would literally draw a red line on a map around the neighborhoods they would not invest in based on demographics alone. Black inner-city neighborhoods were most likely to be redlined. Investigations found that lenders would make loans to lower-income Whites but not to middle- or upper-income African Americans. Unable to get regular mortgages, Black residents who wanted to own a house often were forced to resort to exploitatively priced housing contracts that massively increased the cost of housing and gave them no equity until their last payment was delivered (decades later). This discrimination even affected African American veterans returning home from WWII, unable to use their G.I. Bill benefits.

If you are interested in learning more about the role mortgage lenders played in historical segregation, I highly suggest reading The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein. Thankfully, with the passing of the Fair Housing Act on April 11, 1968 (7 days after Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated) predatory lending practices like redlining and steering were outlawed.
