You hired someone as a 1099, so they're a contractor as far as your insurance is concerned...right?

Not necessarily.

How a worker is paid is only one piece of the picture. Depending on the type of insurance and the rules where your business operates, things like who controls the work, what they're actually doing, and whether they carry their own insurance can matter too.

This comes up a lot because “1099” and “independent contractor” tend to get used like they mean exactly the same thing in every situation.

Insurance can be a little more complicated than that. Shocking, I know. 😂

If you're using 1099 workers in your business, tell your insurance agent how the arrangement actually works and let them help you figure out how it affects your coverage.

If you could see my camera roll after a normal workweek, you would find approximately:

📸 Photos of buildings I am looking to insure
📸 Screenshots of of notes I have taken on paper
📸 At least one picture of a Facebook or Instagram post I want to remember
📸 And roughly 100 photos of my dogs that are almost identical, but obviously I needed every single one. 😂
