It's September 1st and if you've been following along since the beginning of the year then you know today marks another monthly financial to-do item.

This month we're going to focus on insurance reviews. Assess your current situation as well as anticipated medical events over the next year. Does your insurance cover what you need it to? Surgeries? Babies? Therapies? If not, look into solutions that do cover your needed and anticipated needs.

While you're reviewing your insurance, don't forget to review your life insurance as well as car and home. Do you have too little? Too much? Or is it just right?

Not having the right coverage can cut into your savings or put you into debt. Insurance is a critical part of your financial plan so don't neglect it.

Our bank accounts tend to take a hard hit during the holidays. Some people open a Christmas savings account to help mitigate the financial strain. Some start buying presents in the summer. But have you considered the cost of food during the holiday season? It seems like a steady stream of extra food costs start at Thanksgiving and end at New Years.

Your August Financial To-Do: Consider holiday food costs and factor that into your budget now until the end of the year. It'll be much easier to manage if you set aside money over a 5 month time period rather than a 5-6 week time period. Who knows, it might even make the holiday season a little less stressful.
