Today is National Heat Awareness Day!
Here are five ways to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your property when the temperatures spike.
1. Stay hydrated
Drink water throughout the day, avoid dehydrants like alcohol and caffeine, and eat fruits and vegetable to stay hydrated and healthy.
2. Keep it cool indoors
Close shades/blinds and use fans or air conditioning.
3. Protect vulnerable people and pets
Regularly check on the elderly, children, people with health conditions, and pets, and make sure they have a place to stay cool.
4. Don't overdo it outside
Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest hours, which are usually between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If you go outside, take regular breaks from the sun and heat.
5. Stay alert
Monitor local TV, radio, and social media sources for weather and power outage updates and information about where to find official cooling centers in your area.
