When claim volume slows, cutting costs can feel like the natural response. But some costs are harder to recover from than others.

According to Verisk, U.S. property claim volume declined 12.2% year over year in Q2 2026. Meanwhile, Associated Builders and Contractors estimates the construction industry will need to attract approximately 349,000 workers this year. Even as demand fluctuates, skilled labor remains difficult to replace.

That’s why reducing headcount and losing capability aren’t the same thing. A slower period can be a chance to:

Complex loss readiness starts before the claim. ▷

Verisk reports claim volume fell 12.2% year over year, while average claim severity is expected to rise to approximately $18,800. Fewer claims can mean more pressure when each loss requires more time, coordination, and resources.

Complex losses often involve multiple trades, changing scopes, and homeowners who need clear communication throughout. The delays rarely come from one step. They build in the handoffs between contractors, adjusters, and homeowners.

Meet our Senior Regional Field Manager, Natasha Ryan ▹

Natasha runs our South-Central field team, and when storm season hits and things get chaotic, she’s the one contractors know they can call.

She also has one of those leadership styles you feel immediately. Natasha can walk into a room and somehow make everything feel a little calmer. She doesn’t demand attention or authority. She leads with confidence, steadiness and trust, and people naturally follow her.
