We're getting ready for the Eddie to go! All indications are the prestigious Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational will be held at Waimea Bay Beach Park this Sunday, Jan. 22.
In-keeping with the tradition of the Eddie, organizers will make the call whether the “Eddie will go” early Sunday morning. If “the bay calls the day.”
If you can't make it to the North Shore, no worries! The Eddie will be livestreamed on on KHII, KHON, and Surfline.com, with a two-hour rebroadcast on KHON at 8 p.m.
If you plan to attend, please avoid the ocean unless you are an experienced ocean-goer. Waves over 40-feet high are expected for the North Shore, with 35-foot plus forecast along the Leeward Coast. High tides are Sunday at 3:45 a.m. & Monday at 4:30 a.m.
An extra Ocean Safety jet ski will patrol the North Shore, along with an EMS ambulance and paramedics stationed in Waimea for the event.
No public parking will be allowed on either side of Kamehameha Highway from ‘Ili‘ohu Place to Saints Peter starting Saturday, Jan. 21, at 10 p.m. until the event is pau. Parking within Waimea Bay will fill-up quickly, and traffic on both sides of the bay will be severely impacted by the event, so we are providing additional TheBus service.
Four extra buses on Route 52 will run from Ala Moana Mall to Waimea Bay starting at 4:30 a.m. every half hour until 6 a.m. The regular route will resume at 6:20 a.m. Regular fares & passes apply. Transfers and day passes allowed with valid HOLO cards.
Event organizers are urging no personal drones operate in the bay during the Eddie.
We urge those attending this memorial surf event in-person to please mālama ‘āina by properly disposing of trash and following park rules. This includes no alcohol, smoking, large canopies, or fully enclosed tents.
Additional restroom facilities & rubbish bins will be provided. Park showers and drinking fountains are available. Please bring the necessary supplies should you intend to spend the day in the bay. This includes food, sun protection, and plenty of water.
With the crowds and the bay's geography in mind please plan on having limited to no telecommunication abilities inside Waimea.
