SIM Swap Scams: How Criminals Can Take Over Your Phone

Scammers can hijack your phone number by convincing your mobile provider to transfer it to a new SIM card. Once they gain control, they can intercept security codes, reset your passwords, and access your bank, email, and social media accounts.

How it happens:
• Scammers collect personal information through phishing, social media, or data breaches.
• They contact your mobile provider, pretending to be you.
• Your number is transferred to their SIM card, allowing them to intercept texts and take over your accounts.

How to protect yourself:
• Use app-based two-factor authentication instead of SMS.
• Set up a PIN or password with your mobile provider.
• Never share personal information via text, email, or phone.
• Watch for sudden loss of phone service—this could be a red flag.
• If your phone stops working unexpectedly, contact your provider immediately.

Stay alert and report any fraud to the police or Crime Stoppers.

Beware of Brushing Scam!

A recent scam has been showing up in many states. We have not had any local reports, but want to make residents aware before you are victimized.

A "brushing" scam is when someone receives an unexpected gift or item not ordered in the mail from a place like Amazon or other company. Examples of gifts include, rings, bracelets, necklaces, Bluetooth speaker, etc. The gift will have the recipient’s address, but not include the sender's information or be from a known retailer. When the recipient opens the package to see what it is and possibly who sent it, there is a QR code to scan to find out who sent the gift.

Once the code is scanned, all the information from that phone will be sent to scammers. They receive all access to the phone. All personal and financial information is accessible to the scammers and often the victim's bank accounts are drained.

The gift can be kept or thrown away, but the QR code should NOT be scanned for any reason. QR code scams are nothing new. These scams show up in all places, including parking meters.

Inform your family members about the scam and avoid scanning any unknown QR codes included in the package.

If you receive an accidental payment through Venmo, ignore it.

Scammers are sending citizens "accidental" payments through Venmo using stolen credit card information. They then ask you to send the payment back to them because it was a mistake. No, it wasn't.

If you send them money, it will come straight from your bank account because once that credit card is reported stolen, that accidental payment won't be there anymore.
