Somebody asked me recently why folks stick with me for years. I actually thought about it.

I think it's this: when you sit down with me, you're not an account number and you're not a sales target. You're a person trying to make a big decision. My whole job is to help make that part easier.

It's National Grouch Day. I gave it my honest best.

I sat down to write out everything that really irritates me. Here's the full list:

— The sunsets around here are honestly showing off.
— The Cardiff Kook gets a better Halloween costume than I do.
— My kids are off thriving at school and barely need me anymore. The nerve.
— My flip flops are almost worn through and I'm weirdly emotional about it.

That's... it. Turns out I'm terrible at being a grouch.

Happy Grouch Day. Couldn't pull it off. Going to go watch that show-off sunset instead.

So, this happened.

North County voted us Best of North Coast 2026. I genuinely don't know what to say except — thank you. That's a real thing that real neighbors did, and it means more than a plaque should.

I'll be honest, I didn't get into this to win anything. I got into it because I like sitting across from people in this community and helping them feel a little less anxious about retirement. That's the whole job.

So to everyone who voted, sent a friend our way, or just puts up with my sense of humor on this page — thank you. Really. I'll keep trying to earn it.

Well. All four of the kids are officially off at school.

The house is quiet. Quieter than I planned for. We spent twenty-some years building a life loud enough for six people — turns out nobody warns you about the part where it's suddenly back down to two.

Serious question for the empty-nesters out there: what did you actually do with all the quiet? Asking for a friend. The friend is me.

Fall is here. You can tell because the sunset's a little earlier, and someone posted a pumpkin.

That's it. That's the whole seasonal shift. It's still 72 at Swami's, I'm still in flip flops, and I've decided that's the best possible way to do fall.

And here's the part I actually love: nothing dramatic ever changes. The best things usually don't — and a good retirement strategy is one of them. Steady. Predictable. Still there at golden hour, no matter what the market's up to that year. That's kind of the whole point.

Anyway. Happy fall. Go catch the sunset at Moonlight and leave the sweater at home.

People ask me all the time where to go in Encinitas. I've got a list.

Moonlight Beach bench at sunset, homemade margaritas involved. Roxy's for live music and a burger. Las Olas. The Coast Walk. The Saloon for happy hour.

But my actual favorite spot isn't on the list. It's wherever these people are.

Getting all of us in one place takes more coordinating than it used to. Still worth it.
