5 things your car insurance might not cover

Most people assume "full coverage" means everything's taken care of. Here's a few things worth checking on your own policy:

Rental car coverage
If your car's in the shop after an accident, a rental isn't automatically included. It's usually an affordable add-on, but only if it's already on your policy before you need it.

Roadside assistance
Towing, lockouts, and emergency gas deliveries aren't automatically covered. Worth a quick double check, since most people assume this comes standard. Roadside assistance is often covered at under $10 per month.

Rideshare or delivery driving
If you drive for Doordash, Uber, or similar, your personal auto policy typically doesn't cover you while you're on the clock. There's a specific endorsement built for this, and it matters, because a claim during a shift with the wrong coverage can get denied entirely.

Glass coverage
Some policies apply your full deductible to a cracked or shattered windshield. Others offer a separate, lower glass deductible, but only if you know to ask for it, or if your agent made sure to offer it.

Strong liability limits
Liability coverage is required by law in Kansas, but the state minimums often won't cover the full cost of a serious accident, leaving you exposed to pay the difference out of pocket. Raising your limits is often surprisingly affordable for the added protection.

The good news: most of these have simple, affordable fixes. You just have to know to ask about them.

5 things your homeowners insurance policy might not cover

Most people assume their policy covers "everything," until they file a claim and find out otherwise. Here's a few things worth checking on your own policy:

Flood damage:
This one surprises people the most. No standard homeowners policy covers flood damage, period. It doesn't matter how comprehensive your policy otherwise is. Flood coverage comes from a separate policy, and if you're anywhere near a river, creek, or low-lying area, it's worth pricing out even if you're not in a mapped flood zone.

Sewer or drain backup:
A backed-up sewer line or drain can cause serious water damage, but most policies treat this as an optional endorsement rather than something automatically included. It's usually inexpensive to add, and can save you from shelling out thousands of dollars later down the line.

Home business inventory:
If you run a business out of your home, like an Etsy shop, a consulting practice, anything with equipment or inventory... your homeowners policy typically covers your personal belongings, not your business assets. A laptop you also use personally might be covered; your product inventory almost certainly isn't. There are affordable endorsements built specifically for this.

Airbnb/VRBO:
If you rent your home out short-term, even occasionally, that activity usually isn't covered under a standard policy, and it can jeopardize your entire claim if something happens during a rental period, even something unrelated to the renter. There are specific endorsements (and standalone policies) built for hosts. Depending on whether you live in the home full and rent it out occasionally, or rent it full-time, coverage needs will vary.

Full replacement cost:
Some policies pay actual cash value, meaning your 10-year-old roof or furniture gets paid out at depreciated value, not what it costs to actually replace it today. Others pay full replacement cost. This is one of the most important things to confirm on your own policy, because the difference shows up exactly when you need the money most.

The silver lining: most of these gaps have simple, affordable fixes. You just have to know to ask about them.

Client win: was paying over $600/month with Allstate, which I got down to $450 at signup, then re-shopped at renewal and found the SAME coverage for under $200/month. That's what a broker does that one company can't. Tired of overpaying? Link below.

With the hail last night, some of you may notice damaged siding or roofing at your house. Before you file a claim, make sure you check over your homeowners insurance to find out what your wind and hail deductible is. If you need help locating it on your policy, I’m more than happy to check with you.

Just this week, I saved a client over $400/month on his insurance. Same coverage, just found him a better deal by shopping it across 20+ carriers.

That's kind of the whole point of how I work. I don't just quote you once and disappear. Every renewal, I'm checking your policy again to make sure you're not overpaying. This time it made a real difference.

If it's been a while since anyone's actually shopped your policy around, might be worth a quick look. Feel free to reach out to me for some zero-obligation quotes.🙂
