Smith Insurance Agency in 1972

This photo was taken in 2016 after the flood but this little building was the original Smith Insurance Agency once it was moved from Cue’s basement in 1972. The building is no longer there but we treasure this image and the memories.

Smith Insurance Agency, LLC was founded by Cue Smith in 1962. He operated the business out of the basement of his home until he was able to move it to this small building in his back yard located on the Elk River in Clendenin, WV in 1972.

In 1973, Cue's son, Mitch, joined him at the agency. Mitch bought the agency from his dad in 1974 but Cue still continued to work there. In the mid 1980's, Mitch moved Smith Insurance Agency to a river lot, a mile from Cue's house on Elk River Road and his sister, Marsha, became an agent.

Cue retired from Insurance in 2001 at the age of 75 and Mitch sold the Agency in 2002. In 2007, Mitch purchased Clendenin Insurance Agency and moved to a brick building on the river bank in the heart of Clendenin, across from the Clendenin Public Library. Mitch's son, Josh Smith joined the staff and ran the Insurance Agency. On June 23, 2016, The town of Clendenin was hit with a major storm that dropped roughly 12 inches of rain in 2 hours. The river came up quickly and flooded nearly the entire town. The agency had approximately 7.5 feet of water in it. The foundation moved and the building was no longer stable enough to continue business.
