If you're heading to a bigger city, you'll probably see rows of those app-rental electric scooters on every corner. They look like a fun, cheap way to zip around downtown without paying for parking.
But there's a massive insurance loophole that catches people by surprise every single summer.
If you crash that scooter into a parked car or accidentally hit a pedestrian, your auto insurance won't cover you.
A lot of people assume their car policy follows them because the scooter has a motor and you're on a public street. But in the insurance world, your auto liability only applies to four-wheeled vehicles designed for highway use. A two-wheeled electric scooter completely slips through the cracks.
Your homeowners or renters insurance won't help you either. Those policies explicitly exclude motorized vehicles.
That means if you cause damage or someone gets hurt, you're on the hook for the bills entirely out of your own pocket. The rental apps make it incredibly easy to scan a QR code and ride, but they leave 100% of the liability in your lap.
Enjoy the city, but know the risks before you step on the deck.
