Soybeans always look a bit tough this time of year before they fill out but they are coming along.
Corn planted into rye looks good. Jon got a good kill on the rye to make room for the corn.

Time for the soybean bin to get a permanent sweep auger.  Updates and improvements are all part of farm life.

We are always trying to adapt and improve on our farm. When we heard farmers were planting corn into standing rye cover crop, we had lots of questions about how that could work. But keeping living roots growing in the soil is great for soil health. It is a learning process.

Sometimes transitions are so gradual one doesn’t notice and sometimes a moment glares that changes are underway. Jon planted some test plots on his ground and the next generation of agriculturists came out to weigh and test yields. It was a privilege to have Erika in the buddy seat checking weights. Erika is currently enrolled in the Nebraska LEAD program. Alex hopped in the combine with Jon. The old guys got a break.

He smiled and said “Let’s get to work.”
We are deep into corn harvest and somedays the rows seem endless. It takes the whole team to keep everything running. Everyone has roles to play and they are all important : watching augers, fixing pivots, providing meals, shuttling equipment to the next field, climbing bins, and staying calm when the truck fuel filter clogs.
