Many people feel frustrated when they file their taxes and end up owing money because of their Marketplace (Obamacare) insurance. This often creates the impression that the program is a “scam” — but what’s really happening is a reconciliation of income.
When you apply for Marketplace insurance, the government gives you a discount (a subsidy) based on the income you estimate for the year. If, when you file taxes, it turns out your income was higher than what you reported on the application, the government recalculates and charges you back the difference — because you received more subsidy than you actually qualified for.
It’s not a penalty — it’s a correction.
Unfortunately, many times this is not the applicant’s fault. Some agents rush through the application or give misleading estimates without explaining the consequences. That’s why people feel blindsided later.
✅ If you estimate your income accurately → no surprise charges
✅ If your income changes during the year → you can update it anytime
✅ The more transparency you have, the better your outcome
My goal is to guide you properly, explain everything clearly, and make sure you’re making an informed decision — not just signing something without understanding it.
