Today families across El Paso and Juárez set a place for the people who came before. It's a good day for one quiet, practical task: check who's named on your life insurance.

Beneficiary designations override your will. Whatever name is on that form is who gets paid — even if it's an ex-spouse, a parent who has since passed, or a child who is now an adult with kids of their own.

Three things to check:
Primary beneficiary. Is it still who you'd choose today?
Contingent beneficiary. If the primary can't receive it, who does? Many policies have this blank.
Your work policy, your 401(k), and any old policies. Each one has its own form.

Clocks fall back tonight, and there's a reason fire departments tie this weekend to one chore: test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

It matters more in El Paso than people think. The first cold snap is when heaters run for the first time in months, and that's when CO problems show up — a cracked heat exchanger, a blocked flue, a space heater in a closed room.

What to do this weekend:
Press the test button on every alarm. If it chirps, replace the battery. If it's more than ten years old, replace the unit.
Make sure there's a CO detector on every level and near bedrooms. Many older El Paso homes have smoke alarms but none for CO.
Have the furnace or heater looked at before you need it.

A working detector is the difference between a claim and a tragedy. The claim we can help with. The other one, nobody can.

The whole case for renters insurance, in about a minute.

Your landlord's policy covers the building. Everything inside that belongs to you is your problem.
Your stuff is covered — furniture, electronics, clothes — if it's stolen or damaged.
Your liability is covered — if someone's hurt in your place, or you damage someone else's property. That's the part people forget, and it's the part that can cost the most.
Living expenses are covered — a hotel and meals if a covered loss makes your place unlivable.

Cost: usually a few dollars a month. Genuinely.

Q4 is when business owners have the clearest picture of the year, which makes it the right time to fix anything your policy missed.

Five things to check before Dec 31:
Revenue. If you grew, your limits may be sized for a smaller business.
Payroll and headcount. This drives your workers' comp, and an audit adjustment in the spring is an unpleasant surprise.
Vehicles. Anything added, sold, or now being used for work?
New equipment or inventory. Big purchases this year that aren't on the policy aren't covered.
Certificates and additional insureds. Anything expiring, or any new contract with limit requirements you haven't confirmed?

None of this takes long with your declarations page in hand. It's a lot cheaper than finding a gap during a claim in January.

Halloween is consistently one of the most dangerous nights of the year for child pedestrians. Not because of anything exotic — because hundreds of excited kids in dark costumes are crossing streets between parked cars for three hours straight.

If you're driving Oct 31, between about 5 and 9 p.m.:
Assume a kid is about to step out from between parked cars, because one is.
Slow down well below the limit in neighborhoods. Stopping distance is the whole game.
Put the phone away entirely.
Pull into driveways instead of backing out of them, if you can.

If you're the parent: something reflective on the costume, a flashlight, and a rule about crossing at corners.

Have a good night. We'd just rather not take your claim on Nov 1.
