🚨 National Severe Weather Preparedness Week

When people think of severe weather, they often think about tornadoes.
But in Illinois, damaging winds and hail from severe thunderstorms cause the majority of storm damage each year.

🌬️ Damaging Winds

Strong straight-line winds and downbursts can exceed 70–100 mph and can cause damage similar to a tornado.

These winds can:
🌳 Knock down trees and power lines
🏠 Damage roofs and buildings
🚗 Push vehicles off the road

🧊 Large Hail

Hail can fall at speeds over 100 mph and cause serious damage.

Large hail can:
🚗 Shatter vehicle windows
🏠 Damage roofs and siding
🌾 Destroy crops
👤 Cause serious injury outdoors

🌩️ Severe Thunderstorm Safety
When a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued:

✔ Move indoors immediately
✔ Stay away from windows
✔ Bring vehicles into a garage if possible
✔ Secure outdoor furniture and objects

🚫 Do NOT shelter under trees
🚫 Do NOT stay outside to watch the storm

Severe thunderstorms may not always produce tornadoes, but they can still be extremely dangerous.

Stay weather-aware and prepared.
