You shanked a drive. It hit someone in the face. (No time for “FORE”). Ouch.
Your homeowners insurance may step in to defend you and pay damages.
Here’s what a lot of people aren’t aware of about their home insurance policy: Your liability coverage travels with YOU — not just your house.
That means if you hit a wayward shot and injure another golfer, a bystander, or even damage someone’s cart, your personal liability coverage (typically $100K–$500K standard, up to an additional $1M+ with an umbrella policy) can respond to the claim.
Here’s how it usually plays out:
👉 Injured party files a claim or threatens a lawsuit
👉 You report it to your home insurance carrier
👉 Your liability coverage kicks in for bodily injury and legal defense costs
👉 You pay nothing out of pocket beyond your deductible (and most liability claims have no deductible)
A few things worth knowing:
✅ This works even if the incident is “accidental” — which almost all golf injuries are
✅ It does NOT cover you if you intentionally hurt someone (obviously, Happy Gilmore)
✅ Golf courses carry their own liability, but that won’t cover YOUR negligence
✅ An umbrella policy is the smartest $300–$700+ per year you’ll ever spend — it stacks on top of your home and auto liability limits
Fun (terrifying) fact: Golf ball injuries send roughly 40,000 people to the ER in the U.S. every year.
If you’re out on the course every weekend and carrying only $100K in liability, that might be worth a conversation with your agent. Your home insurance does a lot more than cover your roof.
Most people never find out until something goes very wrong.
