Raised by the sea and shaped by generations of ocean life, the Bajau people of Indonesia’s Sulawesi region are among the world’s most extraordinary maritime communities. Often called the “Sea Nomads,” many have traditionally spent most of their lives on wooden houseboats, relying on the ocean for food, shelter, and daily life.

Their incredible freediving abilities allow them to remain underwater for several minutes while hunting fish and gathering seafood without scuba gear. For the Bajau, the sea isn’t just where they work—it’s where they belong, while dry land has long been only an occasional destination.

More than 500 years ago, armourers created these extraordinary steel gauntlets for Maximilian I, one of the most powerful rulers in Europe.

Made around 1485 and attributed to master armourer Lorenz Helmschmid, they were designed to protect the hands without sacrificing movement.

Each finger was covered by overlapping articulated plates, allowing the wearer to grip weapons and move his wrists while remaining protected by steel.

But these were far more than pieces of military equipment.

The surfaces were carefully shaped, pierced, chased and partly gilded, transforming practical armour into an extraordinary display of wealth, status and craftsmanship.

There is no firm evidence that this exact pair was worn in a documented battle, but they were fully functional pieces of armour created for a ruler whose equipment could serve warfare, tournaments and ceremonial display.

Today, they survive in Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum.

Five centuries later, the engineering still works.

And the craftsmanship still looks almost impossible.
