Got an email asking you to send a vendor's payments or an employee's pay to a new bank account? Pause before you change anything.

Call them back at a number you already have, and have a second person approve the change. Urgency is a warning sign, not a reason to skip steps.

Collect payments by automated clearing house (ACH)? Here's a simple habit for Cybersecurity Awareness Month: validate every new customer bank account before the first debit, and again whenever the details change.

It cuts avoidable returns and can flag a problem account before money moves. More practical controls in our guide: https://rpb.li/XDiuw

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. If your business sends automated clearing house (ACH) payments, there's a rule to know.

Since June 22, 2026, every business that originates ACH payments needs a risk-based fraud-monitoring process, no matter how small. We'll share one practical step at a time all month.

PCI compliance is a minimum security baseline. A compliant business can still be breached, and a validated self-assessment questionnaire is not protection against a determined attacker. Nacha return rate thresholds work the same way: staying under them means you have not triggered scrutiny, not that your authorization practices are sound.

The value in doing this work properly is not the certificate. It is that the same measures which satisfy the standard, holding less data, encrypting what you must hold, controlling access, and watching for change, are the measures that actually reduce risk. Compliance is a useful forcing function for security work most businesses would otherwise defer indefinitely.

Treat the floor as a floor. The businesses that get burned are usually the ones who treated it as a finish line.

The quarter ends Wednesday. A short list worth running before it does.

Check your dispute ratio for the quarter, by product and by channel, because disputes cluster and the cluster usually points at something specific. Check your ACH return rate against where it sat in Q2. Check whether any collections need to land inside this closing period rather than after it, since Same Day ACH can still pull those in. And confirm your reconciliation is current rather than something you plan to catch up on in October.

None of it takes long. All of it is considerably easier now than during year-end close.

Most businesses did not decide which payment rail each transaction should run on. They inherited a setup, and everything has run that way since. Wires go out because wires have always gone out. Recurring billing runs on cards because that is how it was configured in 2019.

The cost of that inheritance is rarely visible on a single transaction and always visible across a year. A time-sensitive payment on a wire at 25 to 35 dollars that Same Day ACH would have covered for under a dollar and a half. Recurring card billing generating disputes that ACH debits would not have produced. A large B2B invoice on a purchasing card when a bank transfer costs a fraction of it.

Route each payment to whichever rail actually costs less. That is the whole exercise, and it usually pays for itself in the first quarter.

Money service businesses, including check cashers and currency exchange operators, work in one of the most heavily regulated corners of the payment industry. Most providers are not built to accommodate those requirements, which leaves MSBs managing compliance gaps on their own.

ReliaFund was built with MSB processing in mind. As a member of the Third Party Payment Processors Association, ReliaFund participates in shaping the regulatory standards that govern this industry rather than reacting to them. Nacha compliance and Federal Reserve settlement are part of how the platform operates, not features an MSB client has to negotiate for.
