LIBERTY MUTUAL RETIRES SAFECO BRAND: Liberty Mutual purchased Safeco in 2008 to expand its footprint in the independent agent (broker) space. At the time, Liberty Mutual felt the Safeco brand was stronger than its many regional (smaller) LM-owned insurers they then used to sell insurance via independent agents.

Now, Liberty Mutual is following a trend several other insurers have done in recent years, which is to use only one company name for all distribution channels, be it captive agents, independent agents & brokers, telecenter (800 ), internet, and most recently smartphone apps and AI. Might be confusing at first, but for marketing and advertising, it will deliver a more uniform presence to the public and consumers.

Nationwide Insurance, another large insurer with similar distribution initiatives, purchased Allied Insurance several years ago, used the Allied name for independent distribution, then disbanded all captive agents c. 2018 (Liberty Mutual did a similar thing c. 2022), then a year later, went to a "One Nationwide" campaign to retire Allied....just one other example of consolidation in the personal lines and property/casualty insurance market.

Know this: CAL Financial holds a strong contract with Liberty Mutual. Safeco has done a good job for our customers in recent years. CAL Financial also had a good relationship with State Auto, a very nice (not top 10 in size, but large) insurer which was also acquired by Liberty Mutual, c. 2020.

The Safeco Insurance brand has gone the way of the dodo bird. It's now all Limu Emu, all the time. Liberty Mutual said on April 27 that it followed
