Here's a question I wish more people asked before retiring:
If you have $1,000,000 saved for retirement...
How much of it can you comfortably spend each month without constantly worrying about running out?
The account balance is only part of the equation.
You also have to consider Social Security, pensions, investment returns, market risk, inflation, taxes, RMDs and longevity.
That's why I believe retirement planning should focus on income—not simply account values.
Your investments need a job.
Some may be positioned for growth.
Some may provide liquidity.
Some may generate income.
And depending upon your circumstances, some may be positioned for protection.
If you're approaching retirement, ask yourself:
"Do I own a collection of investments—or do I actually have a retirement-income strategy?"
