The Homeowners Privacy Protection Act was signed into law on September 5th by President Trump. This law, set to take effect March 4th, will substantially limit the predatory practice of "trigger leads" that have been plaguing the mortgage industry over the last 3-4 years. Driven by the increase in interest rates and contraction of volume in the mortgage market, 3rd party solicitors would purchase the leads from the credit reporting agencies (CRA) Transunion, Experian, and Equifax. In short, once a clientโs credit was pulled for a mortgage, these CRA's would sell the clients information to the 3rd parties who would then call the clients without their consent. It was intrusive at best, and harassment at worse. According to Lending Tree 56% of loan applicants would receive between 10-50 unwanted calls and 83% reported being bothered by the calls. Iโve had multiple people tell me they were called over 100 times over the course of a 3 days!
With all the political discourse today, it is nice to see bipartisan support of a bill that will benefit the consumer. I look forward to March when this predatory practice will come to an end!
