Essential Health Benefits Under The Affordable Care Act

ObamaCare (or the Affordable Care Act) has iluenced headlines since the opening of the new Health Insurance Marketplace in October. Surrounded by controversy, misconception and technical defects, the many favorable modifications that ObamaCare delivers to health care have been neglected in the rearrangement. One such change prevails to the sorts of services that are included in health insurance plans: Beginning January. 1, 2014, all health insurance schemes rendered to individuals or to employers with 50 or less employees to be covered under the package of Essential Health Benefits.

Covered Benefits

If the benefits of your plan are applied to the item or service then a health maintenance expense is said to be “covered”. In contrast, your plan benefits are not applicable if an expense is uncovered, that is, you will have to bear 100% of the costs. In another case, there might be 100% coverage of the service. The coverage depends on the item or service and on the health insurance plan. There are variations in the covered benefits from one policy to another.

Four Tiers or levels of Coverage

Controlled by the Affordable Care Act, beginning in 2014, for the health insurance schemes there will be four levels of coverage labeled after the names of four metals as mentioned below.

• Bronze plan = 60%
• Silver plan = 70%
• Gold plan = 80%
• Platinum plan = 90%
The four tiers are distinguished on the basis of their actuarial values or the average of health care costs that will be borne by the plan. The higher the level (i.e. Gold and Platinum), more will be paid by the plan towards your health maintenance expenses, but your monthly premiums will also be high. Irrespective of the kind of plan you have, coverage will be provided to you by some common set of Essential Health Benefits in the year 2014.

The following ten general categories must be covered in the minimum under essential health benefits:

Ambulant patient services – It includes the care received by you at a doctor’s clinic, office or a surgery center without getting admitted to a nursing home. It also involves home health services and hospital services. (Note: some schemes may limit the insurance coverage to 45 days only).

Emergency services – Circumstances like sudden illness or accidents need immediate treatment. These are the cases of emergencies which includes urgent need of an ambulance. You cannot be punished for not being in contact or for not taking any prior permission.

Hospitalization – Care received by you as a patient in a hospital, including attention from doctors, other staff, expenses of all the tests, medications, and room. It also includes coverage for surgeries, transplants and skilled nursing facilities. (Note: some plans may set the coverage for skilled nursing facility for 45 days only).

Laboratory services – Tests conducted to diagnose the underlying disease, or extent of an injury, illness or any other problem, or to check the response of a course of treatment.

Pre-natal and Post-natal services - Care received by women during pregnancy, all over the labor period, delivery and after delivery, and medical attention needed for the newborns.

Psychological disorders and addiction treatment - Inhospital and home care is provided to diagnose and treat a patient with a mental disorder or a substance addict disorder (note: some plans may confine the coverage to 20 days a year).

Rehabilitative Services and devices - Rehabilitative services and devices to help the patient recover their mental and physical skills, which were lost due to any disability, injuries or a chronic condition

Pediatric Services including oral and eye care –‘Well-child’ visits, vaccines and immunizations. Dental and eye care for children under 19.

Prescription drugs – One or more prescribed drug or medicine must be covered in each category of Government approved drugs.

Preventive Medical services and chronic diseases cure - Preventive medical care, like tests, immunizations, cancer screenings etc. are invented to prevent or detect specific medical conditions. Also, care for chronic problems are covered, like asthma and diabetes.

Things to Think about before Deciding on Foreclosure

The real estate market has crashed significantly in the last few years. If someone is facing any problems in paying back his debt, foreclosing can be a valid option but it has its own disadvantages. There are some other alternatives and one should also consider them under the guidance of a professional.

So in this adverse scenario, the value of the home used as equity becomes quite less in comparison to what the borrower may have paid. In addition to this they have diminished income and other money related issues. For these individuals, foreclosure may look like the only option but choosing this option may instigate host of unwelcome consequence for many years. One should know about the consequences of foreclosing in detail and might consider other alternatives as well.

The value of homes bought during the housing bubble has become significantly reduced now. This fall in the value of the houses has been created by various factors. For example, during the bubble construction companies build houses at rapid speed. So in a neighborhood, many houses were built that went unsold. Hence the value of houses in these ghost towns having few owners became far less than what the owner owed. Defaulting of owners in established neighborhoods emptied many houses resulting in a further fall in the value of these neighborhoods. Selling and renting these houses has become quite hard due to this factor.
In this situation of financial crisis, per capita income has dropped to a significantly low level. People are becoming unemployed and are accepting jobs bearing a pay cut. Gone are the days when equity payment was much easier due to good salary. Many residents are finding it hard to pay for their necessary bills such as electricity, water, gas etc., so many of these residents have become defaulters as they bought homes that they couldn’t afford, falling into the trap of lenders who promised low interest rates and minimum late fee charges. Dream investments of the past have now turned into financial disasters. Therefore many are finding it hard to pay for their mortgage payments that have become too high.

Foreclosure may look like a way out of all this but it can hugely affect one’s credit rating for years. The individual might not only lose his house but can also find it difficult to rent a home as credit report can be a part of the renting process. One can also find it hard to borrow money once his name appears in the defaulters list.

Foreclosure can help in staying in the home without paying rent for some time. This could be for a year; this time can be utilized in improving the financial condition of getting a better job or other legal ways to earn income. During this period, new negotiation terms can be developed with a bank or lender. But it is quite risky as some lenders have a no mercy approach on foreclosing a home illegally.

A short sale is an alternative to but it comes with the same negative credit record. In a short sale, a house sells for less than what is owed. This is done by signing an agreement with the bank. So the owner has to pay a lot less than what he owes.

Other alternatives include shifting to a relative’s place for some time if possible or renting a house. This can give some time to earn better income and become financially stable, hence avoiding foreclosure. But this also comes with some problems such as troubling tenants, miscellaneous expenses etc.

In spite of all these ways, the most reasonable and sensible method is to approach a qualified lawyer. In these financial matters legal advice from a reputed lawyer is quite essential. As laws change from state to state and according to the circumstances, the situation can become quite messy if one thinks he handled it himself. Foreclosure can be a way for getting rid of all the trouble but it comes with troubles of its own. So before taking any decision on foreclosing one should seek advice from qualified professionals and should act accordingly.

Holiday Scams: 5 Safety Tips to Protect Yourself

Computer fraud has become a major concern in today’s tech savvy world as online shopping is common practice. With the rise in online shopping during a holiday period, scammers too become more active and try to rob the users by collecting their personal information. So one needs to be vigilant year round, however during holidays, online crimes like hacking, phishing spread like an epidemic. Hackers are always in search of careless online users and steal their valuable information as soon as they get an opportunity.
Here are 5 basic tips that can help to protect you from holiday scams

1. Charity based scams

Every charitable trust or organizations pursue for end-of-tax-year donation at the end of every year. During this period, mail inbox's especially of those having a history of participation are flooded with mails for contribution from these organizations. The majority of these mails are from legitimate charitable organizations, but some of them are just fraud or spam. Generally these spammers state that they are accepting donation on behalf of a legitimate organization or trust but the user is directed to a pay portal website once he clicks on the link in the mail which has no connection with the charity. These websites may appear legitimate as spammers can duplicate a web page with names, logos, and other information with precise detail. Hence the user should carefully read any URL before clicking on to it. In case of any suspicion user should not enter any personal or financial information on that web page.

2. Phishing

It is an act of sending a mail in an attempt to scam the user by falsely claiming to be a legitimate organization. The main aim is to extract private information from the user. So users should be aware of such emails claiming to be from their banks, insurance company or other trusted organizations indicating to click on a link for resolving a problem. One should note that in case of any account related problem, banks usually don’t ask for private information online. They generally opt for normal methods such as calling through phone and directing how to log in to an account or by calling directly to the bank. If one has made the mistake of clicking on the link and entered personal or financial information, he should immediately change his password and contact the bank for addition help regarding related account.

3. Pop-up ads

Cyber criminals mainly target during the holiday season on popular and high traffic sites. During this period a lot of legitimate sites get hacked as hackers bypass their security system due to high incoming traffic. These hackers lure users by offering huge discounts on items through pop up ads on the popular website. These pop up ads contain links to malware. For safety reasons one should stop these pop up ads to appear by disabling it in the browser settings. An ad blocking software can also help. Just a search for an ad blocking software mentioning browser name can yield many options. Before downloading the software one should check the authenticity of the source.

4. Spamming through search engine results

Links to adware, malware and other viruses are being set up regularly on the pages of popular search engines by the hackers. They frequently appear during a software search and look like an authentic web page. Sometimes the searched software can be downloaded but it contains spyware and malware in the form of toolbars and other add ons. One should be careful with URLs sounding too good as during the holidays; malwares and spywares are attached to the search result of popular gift items by scammers.

5. Secured Wi-Fi usage

Wi-Fi in public and highly-trafficked places such as malls, airports, restaurants etc., are generally very insecure. People using these Wi-Fi spots for checking mails, chatting etc. are vulnerable to identity theft as all users might not be minding their own business. Secured 3G or 4G services should be used outside home and free Wi-Fi should be spared for a secured home use.

Save Money and Drive Away All the Stress

The financial credibility building has replaced Losing weight as the most popular New Year resolution in the recent times. Recent surveys have shown that Americans are really concerned about getting their finances back on track rather than working on their health. This has gained even more importance in the recent times looking at the economic recession and worldwide slowing down of the economy.

A lot of surveys have indicated that people are more interested in paying for a financial expert to deal with their personal finances than to pay for the personal trainer. Studies reveal that people who are less sure of their finances are susceptible to anxiety and sleep disorders and other related health issues and are found to be spending huge amounts of money getting them treated for the same.

Here are certain steps which will see you get through the agenda which you have set for yourself- getting the financial credibility which will see you through all times -good or bad.

• Invite your bills to lunch. There are chances that they are not even aware of the services they are enjoying for which they are paying the money. The best way to deal with such a situation is to pull out sometime during your lunch hours and look at your bills separately and one by one. Look at the phone bills, cell phone, electricity, cable and other such bills you are paying. There are chances that you might be shelling out a large chunk of money for the services which you are actually not using. For example, if you have taken a sports pack for one of the cricket tournament series, there are chances that you might have forgotten to discontinue the same by informing your cable operator. If these extra channels cost you $20 a month discontinuing them might save you around $200 a month which is a good amount.

• Be on the alert as a new regulatory approach. Services cost money and companies are really smart these days for the different kind of charges they take from the customers. Savings account, debit cards, online transactions and funds transfer, cell phone services, credit cards and all offer the much needed comfort in our day to day life. However, the companies operating in these areas often come up with new regulations on account of different reasons. Although it is their duty and responsibility to inform each customer about the changes, most of them either fail to do so or they inform the same on being asked by the customers. If you notice a change in the rates charged on your credit card or any of the bills, seek clarifications from the company and pay them only if you feel the same is justified.

• Eyeball everything. If you are taking a mortgage or checking your credit card statement or the checking account statement, check for all the associated fees and the charges which have been levied on it. Contest any of the discrepancies in the statements and try and get them corrected at the earliest. Remember these discrepancies are generally for a lower amount and sometimes they are so miniscule that they would escape your attention. However, if these are not taken care of they can result in huge losses to individuals.

• Never practice impulse shopping. There are times when you will find a lot of offers and discounts on the credit card usage and even at times you will find retailers come up with a lot of options which can force you into overspending decisions. Stay away from these decisions as you can find yourself into a financial trap.

• Save money and eat healthier. Keep your spending within limits. Maintain a balance between your income and expenses. This will leave you with some disposable income which you can divert towards savings and lead a better life.
