They also look at individual card utilization.

Example:
You have:
• Card A: $10,000 limit with $500 balance ✅

• Card B: $500 limit with a $450 balance ❌

Even though your overall utilization looks okay, that small card is 90% utilized—and that's a red flag.

Pay down the small cards first.

In fact, some paid collections can continue reporting for years.

Before paying a collection:

✔ Verify the debt
✔ Ask for a Pay-for-Delete (when available)
✔ Know how the account is reporting

Most people think paying on the due date is enough.

Here's what they don't tell you...

Your credit card company may report your balance to the credit bureaus before your due date. That means you could pay on time and still have a high balance reported.

✅ Instead, find out your statement closing date and pay your balance down before your statement closes.

A lower reported balance = lower credit utilization = potential score increase.

Did you know that your credit card balances matter just as much as making your payments on time?

Keeping your credit utilization below 30%—and ideally under 10%—can help boost your credit score.

For example, if you have a credit card with a $1,000 limit, try to keep the balance below $300. For maximum points, aim for less than $100.

Small changes can make a big difference!
