“I’ve always tried to never step on anybody to get where I am. I’ve had to walk around a few people, jump over a few of ‘em now and then, but I think you’re a true success when you’ve seen your dreams come true and you can take pride in how you did it, and take pride in and respect and appreciate the people that helped you get there.” - Dollie Parton

Considering starting up a jack-of-all-trades business? Let’s talk about a few things to consider.

When an insurance company is considering your business for coverage, they not only consider whether each operation you offer is a fit for their appetite, but they also rate each operation separately. That means it can be both harder to find coverage and more expensive.

Say your entertainment company:

-Books entertainers
-Offers foam parties
-Offers inflatables
-Offers party supply rentals

The insurance company will first determine whether each operation fits within its appetite. If they are, great—you may be eligible for coverage! Each of those operations will be rated separately and assigned its own premium. The insurance company will usually ask for the revenue associated with each operation to calculate the premium for each subset of your business.

Since insurance companies have a minimum premium they will accept for covering each operation, even if your business has a relatively low revenue, you will still be charged the minimum premium for each operation of your business. Those premiums can add up quickly!

While it can be frustrating to hear that one service affects eligibility for an entire policy, these guidelines help ensure that coverage remains appropriate for the risks being insured.

The takeaway? Insurance isn’t just about what you do most often. Your insurer looks at your business as a whole and the risk associated with all of its operations.

“For caricaturists, balloon twisters, airbrush tattoo artists, etc., cut your line 30 min before stopping time. Wait lists generally mean less people get served and you spend your performance time trying to find people you don't know, or scrambling to serve a family of five that signed up for a 5 minute time slot under one name. I discourage wait lists if the client suggests them. The intention is good, but it doesn’t work.” - Performer of 25 years

One of the more difficult conversations we occasionally have with clients usually starts like this:

“I only do that operation once in a while. Can insurance cover part of my business?”

It’s a fair question. Unfortunately, the answer is usually no. Let’s talk about why!

Insurance is written for your business as a whole. Your policy is designed to protect your entire business, not individual pieces of it. If part of your operations falls outside of what the insurance carrier is willing to insure, it changes the overall risk profile of the business. Many carriers simply determine that they will not insure part of a whole.

Even if you only use that service a few times a year, and agree not to do it during your policy period, insurance companies cannot base eligibility on promises or intentions. Your business still advertises and/or offers that service, and the carrier has to assume that a claim could arise.

Why do carriers do this?

Insurance works by grouping businesses with similar types of risk. When businesses within a program have relatively similar exposures, carriers can better predict losses and keep premiums competitive.

Gigs are more than just showing up day-of. Don’t wait until you arrive to find out the details! Here are five questions to ask before booking a gig:

1. Who is my point of contact?
2. Where exactly am I performing?
3. What are the day-of-performance details?
4. What, if any, are the setup/teardown requirements?
5. What does the contract require?

Remember: A little preparation can prevent a lot of problems!
