Your 401(k) balance may look impressive on paper, but how much of it is actually yours to spend? Taxes, account types, and withdrawal strategies can all have a major impact on what your retirement savings are ultimately worth.

Your 401(k) balance may not tell the whole story. Learn how taxes, account types and withdrawal strategies can affect your real retirement income.

You retired. Your income dropped. Then you received a notice saying your Medicare premiums were increasing.

How is that possible?

Medicare may still be looking at your income from two years ago, when you were working and earning more.

If you've experienced a qualifying life-changing event, such as retirement or loss of work, you may be able to ask Social Security to reconsider your IRMAA determination using Form SSA-44.

Before assuming you simply have to pay the higher premium, take a closer look at why it increased.

Thinking about a Roth conversion? Don't look only at the immediate income tax consequences.

Additional income can potentially affect several areas of your financial plan, including your Medicare IRMAA bracket.

Because IRMAA uses income thresholds, crossing into another bracket can mean paying more for Medicare.

That's why retirement tax decisions should be evaluated based on their broader financial impact, not just one number on your tax return.

You may be paying more for Medicare because of something called IRMAA.

IRMAA stands for the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount. If your income exceeds certain limits, Medicare can add an additional amount to your premium.

The surprising part? Medicare generally isn't looking at what you're earning today. It's typically looking at your income from two years ago.

That's why understanding IRMAA can be an important part of retirement income planning.

Building wealth matters. Knowing what you want that wealth to make possible matters, too.

In his latest blog, IAG CEO Brandon Jordan looks beyond accumulation and explores how financial planning can help turn years of success into more flexibility and purpose.

Your Medicare premium went up, even though you didn't change your coverage or use more healthcare.

One reason may be your income from two years ago.

Medicare generally uses your modified adjusted gross income from two years earlier when determining your premiums. So your current Medicare costs may reflect a financial situation that looks very different from where you are today.

That's an important detail to understand when planning for retirement expenses.

Your Medicare premium went up, but your coverage didn’t change. So what happened?

For many retirees, the answer may be IRMAA, the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount.

Medicare generally looks at your modified adjusted gross income from two years earlier when determining whether an additional amount applies. That means a large IRA withdrawal, Roth conversion, investment sale, business sale, or other income event could affect what you pay for Medicare later.

This can be especially confusing after retirement. Your income may be lower today, but Medicare could still be looking at income from when you were working.

If your income dropped because of a qualifying life-changing event, such as retirement or loss of work, you may be able to request reconsideration using Form SSA-44.

The bigger lesson? Retirement decisions don’t happen in isolation. Taxes, IRA withdrawals, Roth conversions, Social Security, and Medicare can all affect one another.

Understanding those connections before making a major financial decision can help you plan with greater confidence.
