Retirement once felt far away for Dan Dewitya. Decades later, the Duke Pharmacy Coordinator has watched steady saving and investing add up, and now he’s planning for another long-term goal: college savings for his two young children.

Duke’s Financial Fitness Week can help staff and faculty take the next step with their own finances.

From Sept. 14-18, 25 virtual sessions cover topics including budgeting, Social Security, retirement planning and more. New sessions for 2026 include “A Path to Financial Wellness,” “Set Goals and Save for What You Want” and “Investing in Your HSA.”

Find the sessions that match your financial goals and register in advance for the live offerings: https://today.duke.edu/2026/08/take-charge-your-finances-during-financial-fitness-week-2026

In 2013, Working@Duke shared plans for a new reclamation pond on Circuit Drive that would collect rainwater and runoff for use in one of Duke’s chilled water plants.

More than a decade later, Duke Reclamation Pond is doing exactly that and much more.

The pond has dramatically reduced Duke’s annual use of potable water and can supply the chiller plant for up to two weeks during a water shortage. Its wetlands also support diverse wildlife, while walking trails and seating have created a scenic spot for the Duke community.

If you spend time at the pond, share a photo or tell us in the comments what you enjoy most about it.

See what was planned in 2013, then visit Circuit Drive to see what it has become today.

From a flower garden in 1940 to one of Duke’s most beloved destinations today.

For Working@Duke’s 20th anniversary, we’re revisiting a story from our June/July 2014 print magazine about the remarkable evolution of Sarah P. Duke Gardens.

The “then” image shows an early view of the Terrace Gardens and what is now the South Lawn. Today, visitors can explore the Gardens and enter through the new Garden Gateway, which includes the Barnes Welcome Center, a café, gallery space, classrooms and indoor and outdoor gathering areas.

See what has changed and plan your next visit: https://gardens.duke.edu

Amazing!

Duke University and Duke Health have been named by Forbes as one of “America’s Best-in-State Employers” in 2026!

Duke, the second-largest private employer in North Carolina, launched the institution-wide Duke HomeGrown initiative, committing $203 million over three years to expand economic opportunity for the residents of Durham and the Triangle. The commitment emphasizes four areas: employment pathways, construction opportunities, local business partnerships, and affordable housing and home ownership pathways.

“Earlier this year, we made our commitment to HomeGrown, focusing on ensuring our Durham-area residents have great opportunities working here at Duke University and the Health System,” said Antwan Lofton, Vice President of Duke Human Resources. “We’re happy that we’re being recognized all over the state.”

Tell us in the comments what you love about Duke.
