VINCE LOMBARDI AND THE NFL TROPHY: NFL coach Vince Lombardi (1913–1970) led Green Bay to five NFL championships in seven years, including wins in the first two Super Bowl games in 1967 and 1968. After he died in 1970, the NFL Super Bowl championship trophy was renamed the Vince Lombardi Trophy in his honor. Many people consider him to be the greatest coach in football history and one of the greatest coaches and leaders in the history of American sports—he never had a losing season as a head coach in the NFL. Lombardi is famous for his “can-do” philosophy of discipline, hard work, and teamwork. A few of his motivational quotes: “The real glory is being knocked to your knees and then coming back. That’s real glory. That’s the essence of it.” “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.” “People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society.”
