Finance FAQ Friday: “What is the difference between a CPA, an Enrolled Agent, a financial coach, and a tax preparer?”

Not all financial titles are created equal. Here is what actually matters.

📊CPA — Certified Public Accountant
State licensed. Passed a rigorous national exam. Required to complete continuing education every year to maintain licensure. Can prepare your taxes, advise on strategy, and represent you before the IRS.

📊EA — Enrolled Agent
Licensed directly by the IRS. Passed a comprehensive three part tax exam or worked for the IRS for five or more years. Highly specialized in tax and can represent you before the IRS at all levels.

📊Tax Attorney
Licensed by the state bar. Handles complex tax disputes, IRS litigation, collections, and estate planning. Full legal accountability behind them.

📊PTIN Holder
The minimum requirement to legally prepare taxes for compensation. It is an IRS registration — not a credential. Anyone can get one.

📈Financial Coach / Tax Coach / Money Coach
Not regulated. No licensing body. No exam. No accountability structure. Anyone can use these titles without any formal education or oversight.

Before you trust anyone with your finances ask two questions: what are your credentials and who regulates them?

If they cannot answer both clearly that is your answer.

Drop your tax questions below and we may feature yours next Friday.

If you feel behind financially, you’re not; you’re just on a different timeline.

Everyone around you seems settled.

Homes purchased. 🏠🔑
Savings stacked. 💰
Life figured out. 😎

And here you are feeling like you missed something. 😩

You didn’t miss a thing! You just have not started yet.

Here is what we tell clients who feel this way: resist the urge to catch up all at once.

Overspending to close a gap you perceive is one of the fastest ways to create real financial problems.

Tackle your debt first.

Live below your means a little longer.

Build the foundation before you build the lifestyle.

The people who get there fastest are never the ones who sprinted out of the gate.

They are the ones who were intentional from the start.

DM us or visit ATLCPAGroup.com to build a plan that actually gets you there.

Every year we see people make costly mistakes because of what they think they know about tax extensions.

Swipe through for the most common myths we hear and what is actually true.

An extension is a tool. Like any tool, it only works when you use it correctly. And the worst time to find out you had the wrong information is after the deadline has passed.

If you have questions about whether an extension is the right move for you, we are here all week.

DM us the word EXTENSION or visit the link in bio to get on our calendar.

At ATL CPA Group we work with owner-operators running a single truck all the way up to clients managing fleets of 30. And one of the first things we look at when a trucking client comes through our doors is their business structure.

Because that one decision alone can save you thousands.

Here is what we see constantly: truckers operating as a sole proprietor under a Schedule C. It is the default. It is common. And it is almost always costing more than it should.

The first recommendation we make? Convert to an S Corp.

That single move reduces your self-employment tax burden significantly. For trucking business owners who are out here grinding every single day that difference adds up fast and it is one of the simplest strategies we use to put real money back in your pocket.

You do not have to be a large operation to benefit from smart tax strategy. Whether you are just starting out or you have been in the game for years the right structure makes a real difference.

Accountant. CPA. Financial Advisor. Financial Coach.

These are not the same thing and the fact that anyone can assign themselves a financial title on social media without any formal education or licensing is something we need to talk about.

A CPA goes through years of education, passes one of the most rigorous professional exams that exists, and maintains continuing education requirements to keep that license active.

A financial advisor is registered and regulated.

These are formal professions with formal accountability behind them.

A financial coach is not a regulated title.

Anyone can call themselves one.

And a lot of the people doing so online did not go through the steps required to become a licensed professional — so they created their own title instead.

That does not mean everyone using that title is unqualified.

But it does mean you cannot assume they are qualified either.

And when it comes to your money that distinction matters enormously.

Here is what we want you to know:

tax is often the entry point for the work we do with clients but it is not the only thing that falls under our expertise.

Financial strategy, business structure, planning for growth — it all lives under the same umbrella.

You just have to make sure the person guiding you through it has the credentials to back it up.

Before you take financial advice from anyone online ask one question: what are your credentials and who regulates them?

If they cannot answer that clearly, that is your answer.

DM us or visit ATLCPAGroup.com to work with a team whose credentials speak for themselves.

Thinking about moving out of the country to avoid paying taxes?

We need to talk.

This is one of the most common myths we hear and it needs to be cleared up once and for all.

If you are a United States citizen or resident you are required to file a tax return every single year regardless of where you live in the world.

Antarctica included.

The IRS does not care that you moved to another country.

They do not care that you opened a foreign bank account.

They do not care that you have been gone for three years.

If you have a Social Security number and US citizenship your tax obligation follows you everywhere you go.

And here is the part people underestimate: the IRS has your Social Security number, your financial history, and access to information sharing agreements with countries around the world.

They are not an agency you want to test.

Now there are legitimate strategies for Americans living abroad that can reduce your US tax liability.

The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, foreign tax credits, and tax treaties with certain countries are all real tools that exist for a reason.

But those strategies require proper filing — not avoiding it altogether.

The move is not to stop filing.

The move is to file correctly with someone who knows international tax law.

If you are living abroad or planning to and you have questions about your US tax obligations we can help.

DM us the word ABROAD or visit ATLCPAGroup.com to schedule a consultation.

If someone told you your business never has to pay taxes — they lied to you.

And we say that with love because we have seen what happens when business owners follow that advice.

Penalties. Back taxes. Interest. IRS notices. Sometimes worse.

A thriving business generates profit. Profit gets taxed. That is not a loophole problem. That is how the tax code works.

What changes with the right CPA in your corner is how much of that profit gets taxed. That is where the real work happens.

Structure, elections, contributions, deductions, timing — all of it done legally and documented correctly so you are protected if anyone ever questions it.

That is the conversation worth having.

Not how to pay nothing but how to keep as much as legally possible.

If you are ready for that conversation we are ready for you.
