Most retirees hear that annuities are “back” and assume something has changed. In reality, annuities have been growing for years—but most people still don’t fully understand what they are, how they work, or what they’re actually buying. That confusion can lead to false confidence, unnecessary fees, and decisions that don’t align with how you want to live in retirement.

When it comes to simplifying complex topics, everyone loves an easy to remember rule of thumb. But there’s one rule we can do without—and not surprisingly, it’s a favorite on Wall Street. We’re talking about the “8x rule”, the financial services industry’s favorite guideline for how much money you’ll need stashed away for retirement. The formula suggests you’ll need eight times your annual salary saved by the age of 60 to live out your golden years comfortably. If that sounds intimidating, the good news is you probably don’t need that much.

For decades, inherited IRAs worked one way.

If you passed away, your kids could stretch the withdrawals over their lifetime — slowly, strategically, and often without blowing up their tax bracket.

Then the rules changed.

In this video, Greg breaks down what the old “lifetime stretch” allowed, what the new 10-year rule forces your spouse or children to do, and how much of that account (in dollars) could end up going to Uncle Sam instead of your family.

Most retirees worry about long-term care at some point. They’ve seen a parent in a nursing home. They’ve heard the stories. So when someone finally “checks the box” by buying a long-term care policy, there’s often a huge sense of relief. Problem solved. Risk handled. Retirement secured.

But is it?

No matter how good a financial advisor claims to be, no one can predict the market. Yet it’s hard not to be worried when a steady drumbeat of experts spews conflicting opinions; some warn we’re headed for a correction, while others confidently claim there’s growth ahead. But here’s a clue: it’s not who you should listen to, but what. That what is the S&P 500 price to earnings ratio.

Retirees might assume Required Minimum Distributions are a simple checkbox at 73—until the IRS reminds them (expensively) that it isn’t. The problem is that many people either take the wrong amount, take it from the wrong account, or miss it entirely… and that can turn into penalties and taxes you didn’t see coming.
