👉Many federal employees don’t realize that unused sick leave can meaningfully increase their FERS retirement benefit.

Under FERS, sick leave is not lost at retirement. Instead, it is converted into additional creditable service time and added to your annuity calculation. While sick leave does not help you become eligible to retire, it can increase the amount of your monthly pension once you do retire.

In some cases, that additional service time can even be the difference between a 1.0% and a 1.1% pension multiplier for employees retiring at age 62 with at least 20 years of service.

That shift may not sound significant, but over a retirement it can translate into tens of thousands of dollars in additional income.
