I was listening to a podcast the other day talking about how the mortgage industry is basically the wild Wild West right now with limited regulation due to the state of our current administration as well as limited oversight and regulation and it has been an ongoing conversation and concern for, well, since I started in the industry.
As a licensed loan officer and someone who is an independent MLO who had to take the 40 hour class to get my license and learn all of the legalities; I’ve taken it fairly seriously despite the fact that it’s been fairly irrelevant in everyday practice since the ink dried on my license.
But one of my very first mentors in business, not in this business, but in the business world once taught me that “if it’s not enough money to buy your own country so develop non extradition laws; it’s not enough money to break the law for”- Mama Flo. And I have strived to function with that level of integrity my entire professional career.
As we see these lawsuits such as Zillow and Rocket start to pop up, and I’m sure I am not the only one to have received some tempting recruitment phone calls; I want to urge my colleagues to maintain their integrity and morality. There is no paycheck that is worth more than the people that we serve. Do better. Be better.
To the consumers and the people in the community, anyone who owns or is considering buying a home at any point in the future: expect more from your real estate professionals. Please use a professional. Make no mistake: I do firmly believe in the value of using a licensed Realtor in your transaction. It is their job to know what you don’t even realize you don’t know you don’t know. And this is not a post bashing my colleagues. (It’s a rant bashing the unethical members of my profession🤪.)
But I am saying, ask more from your professionals and take the time to educate yourself on your rights. We have super computers that we carry in our pockets. Use them.
