Being prepared for an emergency starts with asking the right questions!

I recently attended an Emergency Management session as part of the 25th class of FOCUS Greater Syracuse’s Citizens Academy, where we learned more about how Onondaga County and the City of Syracuse prepare for and respond to emergencies.

One of my biggest takeaways was how important it is to think through the unexpected. What would you do if you lost power for several days? Couldn’t access your phone or credit cards? Or needed to leave your home quickly?

These are situations we don’t always think about until they happen, but having a plan can make all the difference.

A big thank you to the emergency management professionals and first responders who work every day to keep our community safe, and to FOCUS Greater Syracuse, Inc. for bringing us together to learn more about the people and systems that protect Central New York! 💚

Such a great afternoon supporting an amazing cause! 🧡

The Ms. Orange Fan Luncheon has become such a special Syracuse tradition, bringing people together while making a meaningful impact for Make-A-Wish Central New York. Over the years, the event has helped raise nearly $2 million to support wishes for local children and their families.

I’m always grateful for opportunities like this to spend time with such wonderful people while supporting organizations doing so much good right here in our community!

Introducing Community Connections 🤝

At RLK, being part of the Syracuse community has always meant more to us than simply doing business here. It means knowing the people behind our local businesses, supporting what they’re building, and helping protect everything they’ve worked for.

That’s what Community Connections is all about.

For our first episode, I’m sitting down with my brother, Philip Kelly, co-owner of The Fish Friar. 🐟 We talk about how the restaurant got its start, what he’s learned as a business owner, and some of the unexpected insurance challenges that can come with running a restaurant.

Because insurance isn’t always the first thing you think about when building a business — but sometimes it’s the things you don’t think about that matter most.

A stronger community is something we build together!

This week, I attended the United Way of Central New York’s State of Caring Breakfast, where Drive Research shared a powerful look at giving and volunteering across our region.

One statistic really stood out: 92% of Central New Yorkers give their time, talent and/or treasure in a given year. That says a lot about the community we’re lucky to be part of.

The research also highlighted where there’s still work to do. With barriers like finances, time and transportation affecting how people can give—and many local families struggling to afford basic needs—this data gives us information we can turn into action.

Thank you to United Way of Central New York and Drive Research for continuing to connect our community with ways to make a difference. 💚

What does it really mean to play to win?

I had the opportunity to hear Coach Felisha Legette-Jack (Felisha Legette-Jack) speak at Key4Women, and one message really stayed with me: we don’t get to where we’re going on our own.

She spoke about showing up honestly, being vulnerable, standing in your strength and understanding that even when we don’t win, we have the opportunity to learn.

That message feels especially meaningful because community has always been such a big part of what we do at RLK. Insurance is about protecting people, but to us, it’s also about knowing the people and families behind the policies, showing up for them and being part of the community we all call home.

At the end of the day, success isn’t just about what we accomplish individually. It’s about the people we support along the way and the impact we leave behind for the next generation.

Such a great reminder to keep showing up, keep learning and keep investing in the people around us. 💚

Summer might be winding down, but this time of year always feels a little hectic! ☀️

Our biggest reminder: slow down and take a few extra minutes to make sure everything at home is taken care of. Check your smoke detectors, turn off the water if you’re heading away, and don’t overlook the little things.

Summer may be winding down, but backyard gatherings, cookouts and pool days definitely aren’t over yet. ☀️

One thing I always remind homeowners: when people are spending time at your home, it’s worth making sure your liability coverage is where it needs to be.
