💳 Building Financial Confidence One Student at a Time! 💳
What an amazing day at Community & Media Arts High School's Financial Literacy Week in the Detroit Public Community Schools District! 🌟 The theme was Surviving vs. Thriving, and Financial Garden was thrilled to share our CreditWise U program with these bright students.

Here’s what they learned:
✔️ How to start building credit and a high score by age 18.
✔️ Ways to avoid drowning in student loan debt.
✔️ The surprising impact of credit scores on everyday purchases—like buying a car.

👀 Did you know? Apps like Klarna and Afterpay can hurt your credit if used improperly. That was a major takeaway during today’s credit activity, where students discovered how credit scores influence interest rates and monthly payments.

We’re so proud to help teens take charge of their financial futures. Thank you for having us Communication And Media Arts High School💚

Did you know that financial aid is not free money? Often, when families are navigating the college search, the term "financial aid" is mistakenly used interchangeably with "scholarships." This is a major no-no because financial aid packages often include STUDENT LOANS. Families sometimes choose a school based on a higher financial aid offer without realizing it includes significant loan amounts. CreditWise U teaches teens the true impact of student loans, including:

Student loans must be repaid whether a degree is earned or not.
The effect of student loans on credit scores.
How student loan balances grow over time due to interest.
Join us at CreditWise U at the Detroit Public Library Main Branch on Thursday, August 1st, and Saturday, August 3rd, from 10 am to 1 pm. Register your teen today!

Are your teens aware of the true cost of choosing Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) options when shopping online? Although these services are available only to those 18 and older, targeted ads are encouraging teens to focus on manageable monthly payments instead of the total cost, setting them up for potential financial pitfalls. Here are two major concerns:

The impact on credit scores: Programs like Klarna or Afterpay often hide critical details in the fine print. Missed payments can severely damage credit scores and lead to significant interest charges.

Misleading perception of affordability: Teens may start believing that all their desires are within reach by simply thinking in terms of monthly payments. This mindset can obscure the actual debt being accumulated.

At Financial Garden, we’re addressing this issue through CreditWise U, a free financial education event for teens. Join us on Thursday, August 1st, and Saturday, August 3rd, from 10 am - 1 pm at the Detroit Public Library Main Branch, 5201 Woodward, Detroit, MI 48202. Register your teen today!
