Did you know FHFA’s refinance fee was delayed. But December is closer than you think

Mortgage rates rose suddenly during the past two weeks.

Without a locked-in rate, borrowers watched discounts and savings slip away.

Why did rates go up? The answer involved a new refinance fee that was set to start on September 1.

The fee has since been delayed until December 1.

But remember, refinancing takes at least a month. And refinance rates are likely to rise before the fee goes into effect.

Homeowners who want the lowest-possible refinance rate should apply 2-3 months before December 1 — which is pretty much right now.
