Costs of Long Term Care pose one of the biggest risks to a households retirement plan. Along with inflation, sequence of return risk, market volatility, taxes, and more.

For that reason, I don't shy away from the conversation around Long Term Care planning. There are absolutely effective ways to mitigate that risk.

- Traditional LTC policies (Income financed)
- LTC designed to complement pensionable income (Income financed)
- Hybrid solutions (Asset based financing)

Self insuring is obviously one option if you have the assets, but it is also likely that if you have the assets to self insure then you understand the power of leveraging your dollars.

I will present some information on this topic virtually on January 26th. Send me a message and I will get you the link.
If you prefer to look at your situation individually, or the 26th doesn't work, let me know and we can find a time to do so.

My team and I will share insights on what to consider when planning for LTC as well as resources specific to your area. Ultimately, we would then look at pros and cons to each of these options so that you may decide if any of these strategies is right for you.

Tune in and I will share some of my personal experiences with LTC Planning and why I am passionate about being a resource for those interested in learning more.

Individual retirement accounts are a popular way to complement what may be offered at work (401ks, 403b, pension, ROTH 401K, 457, SIMPLE, SEP, etc..) so here are a few things to keep in mind.

- Max contribution for an individual retirement account is $6,000/year unless your over 50 years old in which case you can do an additional $1000/year as a "Catch up" contribution.

- This is the total amount that can be contributed to an IRA by an individual - this means that regardless of whether you contribute to a traditional IRA or a ROTH IRA the total amount cannot exceed $6,000

- You can split up the 6,000 into both a Traditional and a Roth but determining the most strategic way to do that requires diving a little deeper (which I do)

- Your IRA contribution does not affect your significant others ability to contribute to their own plan

- If you make too much money as a household you may have to be more strategic about how you create Roth Assets ($140,000 for single or $208,000 filing jointly)

- If you want to convert money from pre-tax (traditional IRA) to an after tax IRA (Roth) for the tax benefits in the future remember that conversions are taxed based on calendar year not tax year.

If you want a conversion to be applied to your taxable income in 2021 there is roughly 38 days to make that happen.

Long Term Care planning webinar tomorrow evening 6:30 Eastern time! Tuesday 11/16.

One of the most costly and likely events that will impact retirees and financial plans is a Long Term Care event.

The average annual cost for a shared room in a nursing facility is:

Fort Collins area: $100,733
Greater Chicagoland: $109,200
Greenville/Spartanburg: $81,975

Use this link to estimate costs in your area:
https://www.newyorklife.com/products/long-term-care-insurance/costs-of-care

Costs are even higher if you want a private room. Can your portfolio handle this kind of annual withdraw? Are you factoring in taxes if you plan to use taxable accounts like 401Ks?

Tomorrow night! If the time doesn't work for you but you have questions and like transparent honest information, let me know and I can set aside time at a later date.

I am hosting a workshop in a few weeks on navigating long-term care planning. This is a challenging area for planning because less and less companies operate in this space, but I am passionate about it for a few reasons:
1. NYL is an industry leader in planning for LTC
2. I worked jointly with one of our company's leading LTC agents and learned more in that time than I ever thought I would about LTC
3. I have received way too many calls about wanting to plan for long-term care after it is too late to qualify for many of the strategies we implement.
4. It is more likely and more costly than most realize
5. It doesn't have to be complicated but it does require some effort to understand the right strategy

If you don't have a long term care plan, or haven't looked at whether it is still effective in today's marketplace come check out this workshop.

If you want to attend but can't make the time, send me a message. I will personally make sure you get the information your looking for.
