๐ฉบ NAVIGATING THE 2026 GLP-1 LANDSCAPE: UPDATES FOR IL & TX
As an Independent Producer serving both Illinois and Texas, I am committed to providing you with the data-driven guidance you need to navigate our evolving healthcare system. ๐ Blue Cross and Blue Shield (in both IL and TX) recently shared important updates regarding GLP-1 medications (like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro) for the 2026 plan year.
These changes apply across All Groups, Individual, and Family Markets. Here is a breakdown of what this means for you:
โ
TYPE 2 DIABETES COVERAGE:
Standard Benefit: GLP-1s FDA-approved for Type 2 diabetes remain a standard benefit for members with prescription drug coverage.
Automated Approval: To reduce paperwork, the plan uses integrated medical data to automatically approve these prescriptions at the pharmacy counter for many members with a documented diagnosis.
First-Line Therapy: GLP-1s are designated as a first-line therapy for diabetes, helping to ensure members get treatment without unnecessary delays.
โ๏ธ WEIGHT MANAGEMENT & OBESITY:
Optional Employer Benefit: Medications specifically for obesity (like Wegovy or Zepbound) are not a standard benefit. However, I can help employer groups evaluate optional benefit riders to include this coverage.
New MASH Pathway: As of late 2025, there is a new coverage pathway for Wegovy when used to treat MASH (a specific liver disease) for members who meet certain clinical criteria, even if their plan generally excludes weight-loss drugs.
๐ซ PREVENTING WASTE & ENSURING ACCESS:
Dispensing Limits: To reduce medication waste, members are now limited to filling one GLP-1 prescription at one strength every 28 days.
Supply Support: While the FDA reports many shortages have been resolved, some local pharmacies may still face challenges. I recommend confirming stock with your pharmacist before your refill date.
